Showcase – Jonny Tango
So, Jonny Tango what’s the story behind your Gamertag?
It was really just a name that was randomly generated when I used to do a lot of system linking with a couple friends in Halo and Halo 2 before Xbox Live was something I could obtain but I kept using the name, and when it came to the day of choosing a Gamertag, Jonny Tango just seemed right. It’s stuck with me for a while, I now find a lot of friends calling me “Tango” than my real name. But I like the name and I think it suits me very well!
Can you give us a peek in to your life outside of gaming?
Well I live in a small town near the Mississippi River in Iowa. I live with my fiancé Phylesia, who’s been very supportive of my projects and of course GameRantComics.com. I work a pretty boring desk job, but it gives me more time to surf the net, and most importantly work on my comics. Other than that there’s not a lot to say about my life outside of gaming. It sometimes gets to the point that I get more text messages, Tweets, and emails about joining a game than I do when I’m actually appearing online.
As the artist and creator of Gamerantcomics.com, what was your inspiration to start working on the comics?
It started when I was in high school. Over that time I had been managing a locally owned video game store, so I knew the way things work in the gaming market. Since they weren’t EB Games or Game Stop, I knew how smaller companies worked. Also I had started up a Video Game podcast for the company I worked for. I hosted the show with two great guys, and after doing the podcast with them for a couple months I realized that I was interested in doing a comic about video games. Ross (one of the co-hosts) was there when I came up with the idea of GameRantComics.com and was thrilled about the idea and was willing to help me set it up.
With his help I was able to create to set up the site, which was originally supposed to be a bi-weekly web comic. Ross thought the website would only be successful if I would be willing to create a comic once a week. At first this looked like an impossible task, but after I started the first few issues it became an addition. I’ve now been working on GameRantComics.com for a little over a year, and it’s been a blast! I’ve met so many amazing people. Now thirty-seven comics later, I’m surprisingly still at it and I couldn’t be happier!
I’m still laughing at the Sims drawing…
Now that we have peeked curiosity, how often do you release/post new comics on your site?
Well like I said I try to do one once a week. Around Thanks Giving my laptop’s hard drive fried so it was about a month before I was able to post a comic. Now that my laptop’s back from the shop I’ll be back to a weekly comic.
Since we know you like drawing comics, tell us what job that you have ever had was the worst/weirdest?
I can honestly say I haven’t really had either unless you count Spencer gifts. Working at Video Game stores weren’t bad or weird, but the customers certainly were. Going back to my inspiration for my comics, I’d have to say my experience in a retail store helped me take some of my experiences and put that into some comics. Take my Valentine’s Day comic I did last year. That was something I actually did. There’s a lot of Web Comics out there about video games. I wanted to focus on the personal experiences I had obtained from working at a Video Game stores, and I had taken a lot of what I saw from working there.
What was the first game you ever played?
The first game that I can really remember playing was Super Mario Bros. 3. I remember playing it with my brother and Dad. I guess as a kid I spent a lot of Saturday and Sunday morning glued to the TV jumping on turtle shells, and collecting coins. Now my Saturdays and Sundays consist of me just yelling “Campers” a lot….
What is your favorite game for the 360 so far?
That’s a hard question, there’s so many great titles out there, I mean if the question was asked: “What’s your favorite game today?” I’d say Mass Effect 2. Overall, I’d have to think long and hard about it, and I don’t think I could narrow it down to just one.
What new/future games are you looking forward to?
I’m really looking forward to Sonic the Hedgehog 4, God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII of course, but what I’m really looking forward to is the new Dragon Age: Awakening Expansion. I really think DLC and Expansions are a great way to put more life (and money) in to a game, and I hope other developers learn from what BioWare and Bethesda are doing.
Has the Xbox 360 experience been a good or bad one for you?
That really depends on the game, I mean I love the updates we’ve been getting for the dashboard, but I wish more of those new “apps” could be integrated into my game. Besides that, I’m really happy with my Xbox 360 experience. The game library is great, and I can always find something that make the monthly Xbox Live fee completely worth it!
If there was anything you could add to the Xbox 360, what would it be?
A disc changer! Lol. I’d love to have four or five games into my system at once and not have to get up to change them! That may make me sound lazy, but I think of it as inventive…
Ok. One game. One shot. Who would you play against, who wins and what game are you playing?
Hmmm…. I guess it would be fun to play against Christian Bale in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Only because I’d be interested in finding out how he would react against all the glitches that seem to constantly surface after every update. I think Bale would win, he seems like a Care Package glitching kinda guy…
Christian Bale does seem a little scary… Any parting thoughts or words?
Well I’d like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to share a part of my life with you! Just want everyone to check out the site, and don’t forget to leave some comments. I love criticism good, or bad! Also if you’d like to know more about me or my comics, you can listen to a podcast I co-host at GamerScagNation.com. Again thank you!
