Sony sued over Blu-ray tech
California-based Target Technology suing Sony over protective layer on Blu-ray discs
Sony Computer Entertainment is once again caught up in another legal battle, this time over technology used on its Blu-rays discs.
Californian company Target Technology has taken action against Sony who its technology is being used in the thin alloy film coating on Sony's Blu-ray discs.
The company has filled the lawsuit against SCEA, Sony Pictures and Sony DADC, with claims that the Blu-ray discs infringe a patent filed by target Technology in 2006 entitled 'Metal alloys for the reflective or the semi-reflective layer of an optical storage medium'.
Target seeks to receive damages from Sony.
This is not the first time Sony has been in trouble over its tech, having recently been forced to pay $97 million in damages to Immersion Corporation after loosing a legal dispute over the force-feedback technology used in the Dual Shock 2 controller.

Firmware updating was very necessary... Free online isn't the quality they were hyping about, and solid hardware is good for now, but the hardware isn't even a year old yet.
So to me… It’s a wait & see.

They weren't saying anything other than online play and that's exactly what you get, firmware update is necessary but it's also necessary for the 360 yet it happens ony twice a yr. I prefer the 'when it needs to be done, it's done' approach.
And the hardware is great going by the 360's standard which was busting up for people on day one.
Good stuff right there. It's just a shame they can't get the games out as that's a major drawback and kinda knocks those good points clear.

No they were hyping it to be just as good as XBL but better because it's FREE... I can't believe you don't remember. So until it is... It's a wait & see.
firmware update is necessary but it's also necessary for the 360 yet it happens ony twice a yr. I prefer the 'when it needs to be done, it's done' approach.
Yet, it's still far off from LIVE, so they have more work to do. = Wait & see.
And the hardware is great going by the 360's standard which was busting up for people on day one.
I agree there without real proof, but I also know there were PS3's breaking on day one, and far less people own them, and I know they get far less playing time because the lack of games = Wait & see
Good stuff right there. It's just a shame they can't get the games out as that's a major drawback and kinda knocks those good points clear. = Need good games to really test a system... A lot of 360 owners were playing the 360 non-stop while PS3 owners are waiting for those good games... It's a wait & see.
Too me isy... It's a wait & see.

1. You totally missed the firmware point. Sony issue the firmware releases when they're needed. MS don't. We needed the BC updates but had to wait months to get em.
2. Xbox Live is a heck of a lot better, but then it is much more expensive. In totality, it's a cheap thing for MS to do considering the turnaround they get, it's peer to peer from what I remember.
3. I'm sure people who bought their PS3's immediately switched them off, wrapped them in bubble wrap and tucked the console under the bed.
4. Ding! Only point that I can agree with you on completely. Except there were many more complete next gen games on the PS3 than there were on the 360. The bulk of the 360 titles were ports of last gen titles.

$50 is not that expensive. I am willing to pay it and hell, I dont play online much. PSN is free, and while I always welcome the price of $0, there is always things you need to expect - such as it not being as fluent as Live. For what PSN is though I cant complain. Then again how can one complain when its free. Now I may complain about Live GAMES and the Marketplace, but as for Live as a service, I cant because I enjoy it. It is very well organized.

That's not true... It also takes time for Sony to release fixes. Remember that MARCH update Sony fans were waiting on?

Well when Sony can do just as good & FREE... We'll then see what Microsoft will do... However, right now it's a wait & see.
3. I'm sure people who bought their PS3's immediately switched them off, wrapped them in bubble wrap and tucked the console under the bed.
Yeah... Right after they finished Resistance, because I believe most already had a 360.
4. Ding! Only point that I can agree with you on completely. Except there were many more complete next gen games on the PS3 than there were on the 360. The bulk of the 360 titles were ports of last gen titles.
Yeah, and most PS3 games were ports of those ports.
Wait & see my friend... I can't wait for that potential, can you? lol
big isy
05-25-2007, 06:18 PM
Actually the PS3 games were ports of 360 titles that were original. Call of Duty 3, Oblivion and there's probably something else there I'm too tired to think of lol.
The thing with Live is that I'm sure its great for you guys, but we're paying much more than you (more so than expected) and we're getting worse. It's still good, but nowhere near as good as it should be when compared to the service you guys get across the pond. So until MS steps up and decides to stop screwing Europe, I'll continue to dismiss it's service as too expensive.

I get that, believe me, but even with the extra cost it should have, it's still more. It's like the console itself is more expensive but it's on the level that it should be at, ie, they're not making more of a profit from it over here than they are there. Live is a whole new system.

I was gonna mention in the previous that the 360 hardware is actually reasonable. As is the PS3 price as we have a higher VAT on products, especially those brought in from abroad.
The only thing we get screwed on is the pricing of Live and lack of Video marketplace on the 360. And for the PS3, a loac of content on the PSN. Everything else PS3 related is on par with the US.

Not the point, you get more free content than we do as well as other stuff. Video marketplace is a rip off but it's still an absent feature.
Also, I just remembered that MS issued a statement earlier this yr saying the VM is out of the question for the UK, instead we're going to be getting a TiVO like thing.
It was also mentioned in last months issue of OXM.

Do you know if it's Microsoft getting in the way of Europe's Marketplace release, or is it Europe itself getting in the way?

Remember too, its not just MS involved in Video Marketplace, its all the distributors of the content. Now this is not to say its a valid excuse, but MS gets more blame than they should for the lack of VM for countries outside the US.

You bought this point up before and I'll say what I said then. If they can get the MP up in the US then they can sure as heck do it here. Copyright laws are actually much more stringent in the US than here.

That content is broadcasted through MS' service. They're going to take the blame whether they like it or not.

Really... Didn't you get the PS3 5-months later at a higher price... While we get a Sigma demo, Europe still doesn't have it?
big isy
05-25-2007, 07:08 PM
The higher price is completely justified and according when you consider the taxes in place (unlike the xbox was when it originally released....ouch). The 5 month delay was necessary, they can't sell what they don't have. Atleast we got it with some actual games unlike you guys so it was more a 1-up over you ;)
Oh and the Sigma demo is available here, atleast my friends seem to have it.

So then why is it almost twice as much as the 360 there, but in the U.S. it's only 1/3rd more?

That's not true at all... There was no PS3 shortage here, not even in Japan!

Yeah, a 5+ month delay will help with that.

twice as much?! Hot diggety damn! What United Kingdom are you looking at?! The 360 is RRP at £280, the pS3 is RRP at £425. That's a difference of just a sinch over a 1/3.
There wasn't a shortage because people weren't expecting it not to sell. If they'd known it would sell so poor that early on then we'd have had it on day 1.
Even if they did via US PSN accounts, atleast they're allowed to do that. Unlike Live which no longer allows us to download US stuff.

It's priced accordingly to the tax. The higher the thing is taxed the more they have to charge for it and since it costs more anyway, the price passed on to the consumer is increased. remember percentages don't increase consistently. ie, 33% of 100 is not the same as 33% of 1000.
