In an interview with Martin Matt, from the popular GameIndustry.biz site, Sony UK managing director Ray Maguire calls America "a land of cheap people"

Funny, I remember paying $2500+ for my HDTV... $2200+ for my refrigerator & $2400+ for my washer & Dryer - All rated the best.

It's things like this that makes Sony look stupid.

Did you read the original and entire statement or just cut him off because it makes him look bad?
If you take what's considered to be the most expensive and the least expensive – consider the US with its massive land and cheap people. Then you look at the UK – a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more. The cost of retail is vastly more in the UK than it is in the US and that's before you even stop to consider the US doesn't have VAT at RRP, they put a small amount on afterwards. Whereas, we get stung by 17.5 per cent. And pity the poor Irish and places like Sweden.

But we have to remember this is no different to selling a cup of Starbucks coffee or a McDonald's hamburger. This is the cost of living in the UK. It just becomes another barrier for us to get more product into the marketplace because the price needs to be set higher to get from our factory to the consumer.

It doesn't matter what he compares it to isy... He still called my country cheap.

If that is so, what is Japan, since the PS3 is cheaper there. Oh, but he wouldn't dare go there to talk his crap about Japan... Now would he?

I take it as a compliment. Because I am a cheap person. Now if he were to say our women were cheap - ha. They dont come cheap.

Besides the cost of living is greater in Europe than in the US.

Thats because the UK media is comparing the US and UK prices.
Read the entire thing, he's right, you guys got it cheap over there with everything. His wording is ****ed up, I agree but you really think he was trying to insult you? I mean come on! You're just being pathetic now.

Yes, it's all in his wording... I take it as an insult.

Btw, he doesn't need to compare Europe to the U.S.... Maybe he should just worry about the PS3 sales there!

Yes, he does. Did you read the question?
Have you read the original source that quote was taken from or did you just get it from that site you linked to? The guy asks him why its more expensive in the UK than the rest of Europe. He explains the full VAT issue using the US as an example as everyone knows how the US system works.

He doesn't need to use the U.S. as an example... That's a European matter. he can shove his comments about us up his bum! LOL, I just used European slang.

Everybody knows the US value added tax, its more logical of him to use something we all know as an example than something we don't. In order to explain why it's more expensive, he needs to explain the VAT issue.....ah forget it.
And I've never heard that slang used here.

I believe that most of it comes from the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as in WW2.

In a way, I don't blame them... But I do for being on Hitler's side & bombing Pearl Harbor in a sneak attack.

Back on topic. SCEA has since put up a statement clarifying what the guy meant. I recall reading it on Joystiq so head over and see it yourself.Bear in mind he isn't Japanese and is British so blame us for any racism you feel ;)

The labor is so cheap because we got these idiot Mexicans running across the border.

You know what, that does it. Give the mayor of Juarez, or whatever freakin Mexican city that was where he was pissed off about GRAW2. War is on with those bean burritos! BRING IT.

so you've been to japan and seen this so called racism?? Because Japan is more americanized than most of the other countries in the world. They love America.

blazsox
03-27-2007, 07:40 PM
And if they hated us for the nuclear attacks, why would they allow for exporting their technologies over to us. Because they are money hungry and dont give a rats ass? Please, the Japanese worry more about their culture than they do money. At least compared to US Businesses.

I've been to japan many times and you're pretty much on the money.
When it comes to business the japanese are very insular, it can be perceived as racism maybe. Culture-wise though they're potty about the west and follow western trends very avidly. They like their own stuff of course, but they really do embrace much of america's cultural output. The stuff they don't embrace is usually just something they genuinely don't "get" because of the obvious cultural divide.

To both of you, DJ & Blaz... Japan relies on the U.S. economically, but it doesn't mean they like it.

Go check to see how much they spend on their own military... Who is it that protects them?

Yeah, they better show the U.S. love

but that isn't economically that is in defense of their country... and it's not Japan's choice to have America defend them... America decided that for them...

Well...they love our economy. They hate our workers and especially being forced to use American management in the factory they build here to avoid import tariffs. One of the links I posted supported this. I do my part by not buying Jap cars.

Japan has become more Americanized since the 80's but mostly in areas of leisure like entertainment, vacation time, etc.

so DJ have you been to japan yourself? just wondering because when i was stationed there in the Marine Corps there was plenty of people who didnt like the U.S. yes there is a big presence of U.S. buisness and american products but there is all over the world. Everyday outside our base there were protestor that wanted all U.S. soliders out of their country. I am not saying that all of japan hates america, but alot of them dont like the U.S. also if you go to other countrys as well you will find the same things?

It's always interesting to see an outiders view but the governments seem to get along these days. Japan even went to Iraq for awhile.

All this leads to tax abatements for Toyota to build plants here in order to avoid import tariffs...meanwhile...their government blocks the sales of Honda to GM in the 80's and Mitsu to Chrysler (and later DC) in the 90's.
