New 360 called Xbox 360 Elite?

Couldn't find the thread already created regarding the black 360 so I created this.
By all means, feel free to merge them deac.

Game Informer has an article in its April issue stating the black 120 HDD touting, HDMI enabled 360 is real and is coming this April for a whopping $480.

An email was sent to a site (I think its ign.com) from Game Informer lead editor saying the don't do pranks. So, whether you like to believe it or not, its out there now.

I'm still waiting on official confirmation before putting my 'annoyed early adopter' on.

* The Elite will be limited quantities only; that may be as much or as little as a couple hundred thousand.
* The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will have all new packaging.
* Elite will cost $479, and will be a 3rd SKU; it will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs.
* Eventually Elite hardware (in white plastics) will take the role of the Xbox Premium. That is to say, after the Elite is launched and sold out, future Xbox Premiums will have 120GB / HDMI.
* We do not yet know exactly when 120GB / HDMI will become the standard for Premium, but it is loosely estimated to be late summer or fall.
* Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips.
* Prices may remain the same with the 120GB / HDMI hardware upgrade in the Premium Xbox, but we may still see a price cut on the line when 65nm chips start shipping.
* The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360.
* There are no current plans to integrate WiFi into the Elite or future Premiums (although that can always change).

i don't care if it's true. doesn't matter to me, i have an Xbox 360 already. none of these changes warrants a new SKU in my opinion.

why make a new SKU for this?

updated OP with news from engadget. They're now confirming it too.
The Elite 360 as its gonna be known will replace the premium SKU eventually. So it'll be 3 SKU's until all the limited edition versions are out. Whether that means the premium edition we have now is dropped to core or completely dropped remains to be seen.

I like the idea of keeping the black colored ones limited and then changing them into regular white looking consoles.

I seriously hope they drop the current core package and bring the Premium down as a core. Makes much more sense really.

I dont see a new 360 coming, I simply see a new HDD.

But if there is to be a new 360, I aint buying it. Just like I didnt buy the PSone because I had the PSX, and the PS2 slim because I had an original PS2.

No reason for it, for me at least. People look at it trying to fix their mistakes, I look at it as if they are saying "we were wrong, but hey, spend your money again and you can get some of what you wanted before."

System Sales Numbers influence the public's perception of what is best for their money... Sony did it with the PsONE & PS2, why not Microsoft.

It'll start off as limited and available only in black. It'll also initially by the the 3rd SKU. Eventually, when the limited stock is out, it'll be introduced as a regular white console with the added features and will replace the Premium Package. So, in the end there'll still be only two SKU's.

Its unclear whether the second, lower SKU is going to be the current core package or current premium package.

there have been pics of the new 360 on the net for a while now. i cant recall exactly when they started talking about it but it was at one of the big game conferences. there are reports out back to feb 8th of this year and even further then that on engadget. here is the link for feb http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/08/black-xbox-360-with-120gb-hdd-and-hdmi-due-for-april/

but if i really wanted a black 360 i would just buy a $20.00 skin for it. yes the hdmi slot would be nice but it isnt worth buying a new 360 for that.

Barely any these days, I haven't been doing much gaming at all. I haven't played any games since Sunday I think it was. I turned on my Xbox 360 on Tuesday to stream some music, but that was it. Life has been crazy lately, and I maybe get one day of gaming in a week now. Besides Guitar Hero II and Halo 3, I don't know if I'm going to be buying many games this year anymore.

I'll tell you what I think... If Microsoft doesn't come out with the Elite, it will hurt them worse. Many people on the Net are now waiting for this new 360 HDMI 120 Gig having black LE system. If it never materializes, many may buy a PS3 (Especially if they already have a 360) by the time they figure it's not coming.

Sales numbers are very important to influence the common casual people to buy... Most believe what is #1 in sales is also #1 in quality/games/extras. It would be a big mistake for Microsoft to NOT bring out a revision to add to their sales total.

It better come... I don't think Microsoft is that stupid to not do so.

When I bought my first Xbox I did it because thats what my neighbor had. Sales numbers had no impact whatsoever on my decision. In fact, I knew I was buying into a platform that would never be #1 and always have the short end of the stick in terms of software.

Being a Mac user, I am used to having the better but less supported system.

That's you... I'm in the RETAIL business (Costco) and when people are asking you what is the best, by saying what sells the most... Then you would see that sales do influence people to buy. Everyone wants what their neighbor has, and if most have a certain thing over the other, more are influenced to buy the more popular thing in that way also.

People still go there to buy products, and they do ask about them (As in what do most people buy) The type of people that go to Costco are the casual majority type I was talking about, unlike your more knowledgeable Circuit City/Micro Center NERDS.

Nope, That was PS2 related... The PS3 is not the PS2. That's like thinking Nintendo would have always been #1 after the NES, or Atari with the 2600 before them.

Well I highly doubt the PS3 ($600) can reach that $199.99 sweet price point to move 50+ to 100+ million systems like the PS2 did.

What is more likely is that the 360 will hit that $199.99 price point WAY before Sony can hit $399.99 with the $600 PS3.

With the way things are going now (That's without a 360 price reduction)... The PS3 will never outsell the 360 in their lifespan.

Have you been reading what I have said? = SALES bring GAMES, but for many (Casuals)... The PRICE of the system causes them to buy or not to buy.

The PRICE is very important for the poor income unfortunate = Many more people than middle to High class Hardcore gamers.

The PS2 showed this once it hit that $199.99 price point, and it's sales took off... Developers never looked back once that happened.

PS3 is off to a far better start than 360 was after launch so any assurances you might give about 360 outselling are suspect.

Not to sound redundant but that $199 price point likely will not happen this time (at least not while these models are current). Everything is more expensive this cycle. It bucks the whole faster...better...cheaper paradyme in consumer electronics.
