View Full Version : Upgrading my PS3 HDD

Well believe it or not, 60GB of HDD is just not enough for the PS3 these days. With more and more games having these (bogus) installs, I am forced to upgrade my HDD.

You might say, well just delete some of the installs for games you don't play. Problem is, I still play these games. Haze takes up 4GB, MGS4 takes up around 4-5GB, GTAIV is around 4GB, Ridge Racer 7 (though is optional) is around 5GB, MLB takes up about 3-4GB. And there's more.

It adds up. And now the custom soundtracks (finally) added to the system, I wanted to port over my music onto my PS3 HDD to store.

I thought maybe to get a 120-160GB HDD because that should cover it. But why stop there. I spotted a nice Samsung 320GB on Newegg for $109 with free shipping. Though I did pay only $119 for my 500GB external drive, internal laptop ones are always more expensive.

I am currently backing up all my data on my external drive right now from the PS3, and should be buying this new HDD within a week.

Congrats MS, though your HDD is 40GB smaller than my PS3 one, I have never needed to upgrade to the 120GB.

I've still got about 20GB left on my 60GB. I only have 2.8GB left on my 360 HDD. I'd like to upgrade my 360 HDD but I don't need 120GB.

Ive been hovering over the 3.8GB free mark on my 360 for quite some time.

Well thankfully I didn't have to upgrade then but now I am forced to. Got three new games today, one of which is Saints Row 2 which requires 3.8GB. I only have 4.4GB left, so I went through my drive to see what could be deleted. Problem is, nothing can be deleted. I already have a lot of my old game saves on my external drive, but I have nothing left to delete without constantly having to re-install games.

I was going to go with a 320GB but found I don't need that much. I am picking up a Toshiba 250GB one from Newegg for just a little over $60.

From what I read the process seems easy to change out the HDD. I just got to make sure I lose no data in the process.

I bought the Toshiba MK2552GSX from Newegg this past week and report back that either the one I got was faulty or it doesn't work. I backed up all information onto an external Calvary CAUE37400 to restore later onto my new HDD. During the restoration process it wouldn't go beyond 40%, and I attempted this three times. The blame may be put on the external but I have been using it to hold old game saves and files for my PS3 and never once had an issue.

Unfortunately Newegg's support is charging me a restocking fee for a defective item. They were also going to charge me for shipping but I was able to dispute that. I am returning it for a refund, and planning to buy the Western Digital WD2500BEVS but this time from Amazon. Amazon doesn't charge restocking/shipping fees for defective items. I may have to pay more for the item (since Amazon charges sales tax) but if I have to return it at least I won't have $20 of fees.

Since Amazon no longer has Bill Me Later I have to hold off until the Newegg refund goes through and my credit card is paid off. Back to using the 60GB for now. The whole reason I needed to upgrade is for these game installs.

Also got a blog about this, read it here (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?b=5786) if you wish
