PS3's version of RROD?

The "Red Ring of Death" affecting the Xbox 360 has been a nightmare for Microsoft. It has cost lot of money to the company, as it was forced to extend the system's warranty to cover this technical problem, which is rumored to have a failure rate as high as 16%. Most systems experiencing this glitch started to fail months after they were acquired, so it remains to be seen what would be the actual consequences of the RROD.

Now, the PlayStation 3, which shipped a year after the Xbox 360, may be the next system to experience a systemic hardware failure.

Threads describing an 80010514 error for the PS3 have started to pop up in different forums across the Internet. It seems this error is associated with a malfunction of the Blu-ray Disc drive, which wouldn't come as a surprise considering this next-gen optical disc technology is relatively new and it is still being developed and improved.

Interestedly, at the time of this writing the PlayStation.com forums are temporarily closed...

We'll have more on this as it develops.

Hmm, never heard of it before. Guess only time will tell if it's a real problem.

EDIT: I just found some more information about this error. Apparently it has nothing to do with the Blu-ray drive at all. The error can either be caused by a faulty sector on the HDD or software/firmware updates being installed incorrectly.

This is bullshit... I've gone to many forums & the level of Ps3 failures are very minimal compared to 360s.. Even during 360s first 6 months there were far more failures than the PS3 after almost a 1 1/2 years.

How about Microsoft fixes their shit before a Xbox site starts to talk shit on someone else?

I think this could be an attempt to level the playing field by Xbox fans. To think that the Ps3 would just randomly develop a huge fault this far in its lifetime is a bit far-fetched.

Not only that, but it's completely wrong... It has nothing to do with the Blu-Ray drive & for dumb ass “Cesar" to write "Interestedly, at the time of this writing the PlayStation.com forums are temporarily closed..." - Implying that this incorrect FUD about the Ps3 is what caused it, is the most ignorant attempt by someone at a game site ever.

The Ps3 forums are down because of maintenance... That's it.

That could be. I found a post on the PS boards about this and there were about 4 people saying they had this error. All of them just happened to be new members to the forums.

Dumb ass Xbox fans that will do anything to make the Sony fans feel bad about their console of choice.. I also believe many Sony fans did the same.

Of course Sony fans did the same with the RRoD. Wasn't too hard to pick them out on the Xbox forums.... Silver members with no gamerscore or games played.

Yep, I remember... Yet now when I go to the Xbox.com forums to see what Xbox fans are saying, all that's there are mostly 360 RRoD threads by Gold owners.

The 360 is truly a Piece of crap.

haha at TX. yeah. this stuff is so overrated. just play the console and if it craps out get it fixed. that's what i do. or sell it for something else. i have more important things to do like finish Dark Sector, Command and Conquer, Turok, Devil May Cry 4..start playing Condemned 2, Burnout Paradise, get ready for GTA IV (although i'm not a fan), get ready for Ninja Gaiden 2...damn too many things on the gaming front.
