View Full Version : I think Blu ray is going to win.

Now I'm a Xbox 360 fan 100%, I don't have a PS3, don't want one. But now that I'm looking at it, I think Sony is going to make Blu-ray win. Alot of the major movie studios support Blu-ray exclusively, like Sony Pictures, Fox, Disney, and Lionsgate. Those are alot of movies that are on Blu-ray and not HD-DVD. HD-DVD doesn't have enough studio support. Alot of my favorite movies are on Blu-ray and not on HD-DVD.
I seriously think Blu-ray is going to win this format war, unless more studios support HD-DVD.
And Blu-ray isn't that expensive. Amazon.com sells them for cheap. Alot of movies are 19.95, and some are 14.95.
Amazon has a site which tracks HD-DVD and Blu-ray sales.

Blu-ray is winning at this point, and I think they will continue to win, unless HD-DVD gets more studio support, because Sony Pictures produce alot of movies, good ones too.
Just my 2cents. :grinking: :flower:

Thanks for pointing this out. BluRay is in a better position everyday. In Australia the matter is all but decided already and BluRay has won there.

The only part of your comment I disagree with is where you said Sony is making it win. I disagree because I feel the superior studio support on the side of BluRay is where the difference is. Apple, a major BluRay supporter, should soon release BR-R drives on their next versions of MacPro's. When that happens more video studios (Mac users) will have the tools they need to publish to the format and it will snowball into a force that cannot be stopped.
MS should have known it's role as a business applications producer and kept it's nose out of creative matters where it is woefully prepared to compete.
I often think they forced HD-DVD out to the market just to jab at Sony and Apple.

i hope not. i can't afford a blu ray player

Well Deac, what can I say other than maybe if you hadn't been given an HD-DVD drive you might feel differently and look at the issue more objectively. Of course I suspect thats entirely the reason they gave you one.
Personally I am looking for BluRay player from a good maker to hit the $599 point..then I'm in.

no even if i didnt have the hd-dvd player, i still wouldn't be able to afford a blu ray player
being objective has nothing to do with it. they're both hd formats. both do the same thing..one has more movies that's it. i've never contended that the performance of either was better.
but for my pocket's sake...i hope hd-dvd wins  i can't afford a blu ray player. heck i can't even afford an hd-dvd player but if i HAD to buy one i'd much rather the $500 one compared to the $1000 one.
it has nothing to do with what i was given. had blu ray been cheaper, i'd be saying i hope it wins because i can't afford an hd-dvd player. lol
i'm really a dollars and cents kind of guy...i have to be when i get paid what i do :(

Since you are already playing movies on a console anyway...
You could have a BluRay player for $399 (you know what I mean). That pretty much shoots down your entire line of thinking regarding price.
DeaconBlade

no actually it doesn't. i'd have to pay $600 last time i checked to get a PS3. where is one for $399?

Gee...I wonder which fanboy 1-starred this thread. On second thought no I don't, I know exactly which low-life did it.
Deac, I've seen some of the "grey market" vendors selling them for $399 to $449 but here is a very mainstream seller listing at full retail:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8008513&st=playstation+3&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1156202764757
Even at full retail it's not the $399 I stated but it's also nowhere near the $600 you quoted either. The point remains in either case is a BluRay player can be had for less than half the $1000 you claimed and below the price of any standalone HD-DVD player.
DeaconBlade
03-08-2007, 01:54 PM
$500 is still a lot of money for a sub par blu ray player. i'd prefer a standalone...you know that about me. i was only able to afford the hd-dvd player because it was a review item given to me
i'm a poor working man...i can't afford most of these things unless other means become available. lol

All console video is subpar.
No need to apologize for not having money to throw around Deac. I am ready to throw up the money for a BluRay player at this point either. But the choice as to which is get to me is perfectly clear. I take me main AV system seriously...so seriously I will not use it for gaming.
DeaconBlade
03-08-2007, 02:35 PM
same here...i'm an AV guy that's why i prefer standalone. hopefully if blu ray wins out, the prices on the players will drop.

If they didn't...almost nobody would have one. ;)
DeaconBlade
03-08-2007, 02:44 PM
i know..i saw some at best buy the other day and was like :wtf: haha and the hd-dvd players weren't much better in price...cheaper at around $600 but still a pretty penny in my book.
where's the lottery when i need it. :coolguy:
Sirharper
03-08-2007, 02:47 PM
The lottery would be nice but at this point I'd settle for getting about half the swag you get. ;)
Heck I might even settle for being able to post in the forums of a console I am loyal to.

Oh I didn't mean Sony is making it win, I ment, they are pushing it hard, with all of their games being blu-ray, and all the Sony fans, buying a PS3, it has to be increasing sales.

if you look at advertisements and commercials for new releases it seems like you see a lot more saying "available on DVD and blu-ray DVD" I've heard very little (actually none) saying anything about HDDVD. The ad support blu-ray is receiving is huge and may help drive blu-ray sales.
I still think in the end the consumer will decide which, if any, will win. If nobody buys blu-ray DVD players, why would they continue to market blu-ray discs. IMO, both formats will be a success. Look at the video game industry itself. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft use different formats for their video games, some crossing platforms, others do not, and are successful.

I don't care who wins, because Blu-Ray or HD-DVD won't win overall... DVD/Comcast "HD on Demand"/Xbox Marketplace HD will lead the future.

I don't see a clear win situation, it'll be very close but I expect Blu ray would nudge it. The studio support is immense and to be honest, the average joe seems to know more about Blu ray than HD-DVD. Well, my non-technical brother does anyway.
Pricing is always different from person to person. I'd rather get the blu ray player, its more £££ but my opinion of it is higher than the HDDVD player so the extra cash is worth it.
I can see how some people would disagree but then thats life. ALso, having a HDDVD already would make you more inclined to stick with it than make the switch.

Digital delivery can indeed make a big impact on this debate, at least in terms of "rentals".

Yes, it's "rentals" for now, but it can be implemented to buy at any time in the near future (I hope it happens)... Just imagine having a terabit Hard Drive with all your favorite movies available in alphabetical order at a push of a button = That's is the future, no discs, no changing discs, no scratched/fingerprinted discs. no wasted space, no middleman, no going out & searching for it, no breaking disc drive and possibly cheaper because of ZERO packaging & far less distribution costs.
Also, just think about this... With downloading something it can be saved to your name so that if your Hard Drive breaks, you can always re-download them for FREE again at a later time (Xbox LIVE anyone?) just as long it's on the same system that has your information.
Really guys... That is the storage we should all want for our HD movies.

I can also imagine crashed hard drives and data corruption too. Having it tied to an account is fine but that account would have costs. Unless the price is significantly less than the hard copy (and right now it isn't) then the idea of them being resident will never fly. People still like things they can touch.

Who would get to decide the format?
Thats the problem.

The account doesn't have to have costs... It's something you already pay for by having a cable service. When you have crashes, or data corruption... The system already has your information so that you can re-download the movies again for FREE.
Times change, and people do also... It can and would work if done properly.

Right now it's a niche market, but I think there's been too much money that's been invested in both formats for both to fail. I think one will fail, and it might look like HD-DVD will; but I think it's too early to say for sure.
The outcome of this war won't be decided by the techies and early adopters; it will be decided by the average consumer and they generally go for the cheaper option. I'm hoping HD-DVD wins as I've invested in the format, but it's not a huge deal if Blu-Ray ends up the winner.
