Dear Xbox LIVE Members:
During this past holiday season you helped us break a number of Xbox LIVE records. This included our largest sign-up of new members to Xbox LIVE in our 5 year history and just yesterday you broke the record for the single biggest day of concurrent members ever on the service.
As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break. While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance. I would like to take this moment to thank you each and every one of you for your patience and understanding as our team has worked around the clock to return the service to a stable state.
At the same time we would like to offer a token of our appreciation to all of you in celebration of record success for the service. And as a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge. In the coming weeks we will be sharing the specific details of this offer with you.
Thank you again for helping make Xbox LIVE everything that it is today!
Sincerely,
Marc Whitten
General Manager, Xbox LIVE

Awesome! That's quite nice of them. Totally unneccessary IMHO but I won't turn it away. My motto has always been...
"Cheap is good...free is better". ;)
Hopefully it is a quality title and not some festering turd of an arcade game. We'll have to wait and see.

Well, this sucks. I got a red light on my xbox yesterday and now I have to wait for my box to get here so I can send it off. I guess I can go to Deacon's house since he lives somewhere near me.

IMO, this was a bad move on Microsoft. They did not legally owe anything, because the service is provided "as is." On top of that, there were so many threads on the Xbox forums regarding compensation, and now that Microsoft gave in to their demands pretty much, the next time this happens (knock on wood) there will be 50x more complaining.
Not to mention, the service is basically a steal compared to other online games (like WoW) so I don't get why everyones' panties were in a bunch anyways. The service DID work, it's just that messages and friend invites etc. were messing up.

You're paying for dedicated servers with WoW though... Anyway, it wasn't just messages and friend invites. People would keep getting disconnected, were unable to recover accounts, etc. Plus it completely messed up CoD 4's matchmaking.

I think MS was clear in their email that the free game is to commemorate the milestones reached not for the downtime although I think we all can read between the lines.

I guess I got lucky but I was able to play on Halo 3 and CoD4, I just couldn't send any messages, and sometimes private chat invites would screw up.

It's the thought that counts... Keep it up Fatal... I posted on my blog this morning to help spread the news. I know at least one friend found it because of my site.

The next coolest thing would be if the game was a 'new release.' Like when Yaris or Aegis Wing were released as 'free' from the get go. Hopefully it's at least a better game.

I can log into Live but not Xbox.com. CoD 4's online isn't working for me either again. This is getting pretty annoying.

Last night was bad... I sure hope its a really, really good Arcade game or at least the ability to select from a few of them. I was afraid my Xbox was about to Croak as it locked up and hung at various times. I know this was the case for lots of us, so its not the Box and has to be with Live and how they interact together.

Perhaps, but IMO some intermittent Live issues shouldn't even require that.
The arcade title is a nice gesture tho, and even if it is for the downtime, it's generous.
So far, Live has been intermittent (never 'down', but intermittent) for 14 days now. Live costs less than .14 cents a day or about .96 cents a week. That's $2.88. Any arcade title out there costs more than $2.88.

i finally played a mp game of tf 2, but i am still getting disconnects and it's not ringing anyone on my friends list for some of the arcade games (although it was previously). so the situation still persists...
oh well, two more weeks and counting of this b.s...before i return to any mp for definite. :ele:
