It looks cool, but speaking as someone who owns every MGS game including Acid 1 and 2, I was not blown away. The gameplay has not evolved a whole lot, the animation is weak and the AI is still not very smart.
Something that puzzles me is, where exactly does he keep that drum can ? It just pops up out of thin air. The cardboard boxes didn't bother last gen, but this is next gen. Drum cans don't appear out of thin air, damn it.
That being said, I already have a space reserved for it in the dvd rack.:coolguy:

I'll for sure be renting it when it comes to the Xbox 360 next year. Probably won't buy it though, depends on if it comes out during a busy time of the year.

I have to admit that the trailers thus far for MGS4 have been rather impressive. When I downloaded this gameplay footage in HD last night I was expecting something pretty special. To be honest, I was underwhelmed. Here are the issues I have with what I saw and I also have to admit I have never played the MGS games.
- Animations were clunky. I know they have a bit to go but I felt the transitions from one animation to the next were a bit too drastic. It did not feel fluid.
- The barrel just appearing on him was distracting. You don't see this kind of thing in the Splinter Cell series so why here on the PS3.
- Nudy mags??? Come on, give me a break. That's really how they have him get some health back. I know that it is a staple from some of the past games but that seemed kind of corny to me.
I did think the environments looked great and the textures are greatly improved compared to some of the earlier PS3 games we have seen at this point. I also liked some of the menus I saw when outfitting snake. More than likely this is a rental for me if / when it hits the 360. At this point, this is not a must own game for me although I was really hoping that Sony would finally have something that I just had to have.

Not a Sony game.
I know Konami is developing it. I was referring to the current exclusivity of the game to the PS3.

I didn't say the demo was bad. I said that there are a few things that standout to me that detracted from my interest in the game. As with all things, opinions are not ridiculous. Some folks do not like certain styles of games or certain production values.
As I have stated, the trailers look great and intriguing. The animations in the demo so far are a bit underwhelming and choppy. I have read several other gamers and industry insiders feel the same way at this point. I think my points are valid.
At the same time, there are some really cool elements of the game like his active camoflauge. Really cool stuff there. All in all though this is not a must have game for me. It just doesn't blow my skirt up. Nothing wrong with that.

Play any previous MGS game and you see why the animations are the way they are. Its not a fault of the system or development, its how they developed the series to be.

yeah..well you have yourself another excuse to not buy a ps3...that's all your looking at...the animation looks fine..and of course they'll fine tune... the magazine issue is ridiculous considering the way you gained health in GTA3.. you hold a magnifying glass to MGS4..and the barrel issue, much like the box in MGS 1-3, is a camo used and once you select it, it appears on you..

Not sure why you are always attacking me. For crying out loud, you didn't liek Gears which IMHO is a fantastic game. I have never told you that you are an idiot for not liking it. Like I said, I have never played any of the MGS games mainly because they never really interested me. I still think the magazine issue is hokey. I would much rather have a game like this one stick with the illusion of realism as with Splinter Cell (i.e. medicine cabinet, first aid etc.). Not that big of a deal at the end of the day just an observation / opinion on my part.
I think the animations look a little clunky in the transitions...case in point the barrel just appearing and when transitioning to certain body positions. It just seems a little choppy to me. Again, this just is not my cup of tea and as a result it is not a system seller for me.
Not sure why you take offense everytime I have an opinion about something related to Sony and the PS3. I just don't like their exclusives as much as MS's. It's that simple. Aside from that, I expected this game to be a little more polished in the animations department as with the first gameplay vid we saw of Killzone which nailed the animations from my standpoint.

i've said numerous times that the single player and the graphics on Gears were great but the multiplayer seemed more like an afterthought... and I actually played the game before I made my assessment not base my opinions from holding a microscope over a couple minutes of a demo trailer...

As a long standing fan of the Metal Gear series, this game is looking pretty impressive. I would have to say I don't understand where the barrel would come from though. That is my only complaint. It is minor to me though, so no biggie.
As far as the nudie magazine, it must stop the bleeding or something because the blood would rush from the open wound to.... well, you know what I mean ;)

I think the nudie mag was more for a comedy spoof than it was serious gameplay. There will be other ways to regain health. Besides, Snake wasnt injured, he was trying to get over nausea.
Also, if you played previous MGS games (I know aqua has), you would know the series also has spoofs on scantily clad women. I.e. the lockers on the ship in MGS2.

You really have trouble with basic comprehension skills.
If it comes to the 360 I will more than likely check this title out via rental. Who, knows...I might even buy it if I get a PS3 after a real price drop or two. I never stated the game stunk or it would suck. I just stated that it really doesn't get me excited...yet.
The footage I saw last night was a 15 minute demo of one of the levels and was pretty extensive. I'm sure any educated gamer could make a judgement on whether or not a game interested them based on that and the trailers they have saw. Could they make a determination on the overall quality or even score the game...not hardly. I don't think my intial email qualifies at putting the game under the microscope.

That helps me put it into perspective. I can see how that would be a way to lighten the game up a bit at certain spots and adds a bit of character. It just seemed out of place to me in that environment not knowing the history of the series.
Thanks for the perspective. It helps me understand now that the nudie mag didn't just come out of left field.:coolguy:

And I'm the opposite....I didn't think much of the single player and absolutely love the multi-player/versus aspect. It's heart-pumping/and fast-action packed goodness. The maps are small....but for a 4 on 4...they maps in Gears are ideal. Not only that but how the maps are made are genius for it's style. Aside from the glitches that were predominant for it's first several months, I couldn't find a thing wrong with the game. I guess the best way to put it is that I don't look forward to a GOW 2 cause what could they improve? The graphics are amazing, there's SEVERAL maps, several cool weapons to choose from. There's one for everyone. In all...I can't help but give GOW online nothing but high praise. The only complaint I'd have for it is the annoying folks that can get on there taking trash talking to a whole new level. But...that's nothing a little 0 volume on voice won't fix.

The barrel and the cardboard box are NOT camo. Cold War, DPM, chameleon, Hornet stripe, sneaking, spirit etc., those are camouflage.
That being said, you all bicker too damn much. You all need to stop insulting and attacking each other over differences in opinion about a game.
IT IS NOT YOUR GAME!! YOU ARE NOT ON THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM!! SO YOU ALL NEED TO STOP TAKING THINGS SO DAMN PERSONAL!!
I'm a huge MGS fan (as I mentioned before I own every game in the metal gear series) and even I can admit that the animation is not that great. This is not the PS2, this is the PS3 which is waaay more powerful and capable of far greater things. MGS 4 is my most anticipated PS3 game, so I want it to live up to my personal hype.
End Incoherent Rambling..

Ditto. No need to attack others just because of different views. That's what we are here to do...discuss gaming and what we like and don't like about it.
I'm with you on the animations. This is not last gen. It is next gen and my expectations on animations and other graphical nuances are quite high. Another game that had weak animations when it was first shown from a gameplay perspective was Too Human. The transitions were horrible. I expected much better from the 360 and next gen. This is no different. They need to work on the animations.
Even in saying that, I can appreciate the hype for this game. It looks intriguing and I have to admit the story has me interested. I was merely commenting that right now it is not enough to get me to want to spend $600+. It might get there but just not quite yet. They have some time. :grinking:

I thought I was the only one that saw how bad Too Human animation was..LOL. I mentioned that to someone before and they almost chewed my head off. Some people just have their heads too far up game companies' butts to see whatever faults a game may have.

I'll admit that I am partial to the 360 but I can definitely see flaws in many of the games on their plate and even some that I have purchased and still enjoy. Lost Planet was an awesome game but I still had a beef with getting throttled every now and then by bosses and other enemies and not being able to get back up and gather myself for what I was going to do next.
From an animation perspective, I think the most effective animators have great transitions from sequence to sequence. If the transition is choppy or is not there it stands out like a sore thumb. Too Humana was a great example and I think MGS4 has a bit of work to do here as well.

I can do without MGS 4. I haven't missed any since dropping the PS line.
I just saw the gameplay vid and the concept is F'en ridiculous! Aweful! Camouflage suit? You're going to tell me that if you were to walk down the sidewalk, you won't notice a body with the same texture as the floor? The body shaped texture is bulging out.
This isn't the most ideal example to use...but it was the fastest I found on the web....lol. Discretion is advised. No nudity however...no need to worry. (http://www.bartcop.com/jpg/rs-gore2.jpg)
I know Sam Fisher's goggles one can question as well......but I just think this camouflage suit is too much. Snake doesn't hide the bodies either.
blazsox
07-26-2007, 07:42 PM
Raf - play previous MGS games, you do need to hide bodies. If another soldier finds a body on the floor, he will be alerted.
Now on the demo, there were two instances where that did not happen. One when Snake was in the barrel (there was a knocked out PMC behind him), and the other occured right at the beginning when he went through the doorway from the stairs to get to his second enemy.
But hiding bodies is required in MGS to keep your covert cover. MGS4 will have it.
As for the camo suit....its fictitious. This is a "futuristic MGS" according to Kojima. The whole franchise is fictitious. Its not meant to be taken seriously in the outside world. It has a world of its own, and in this world technology from Otacon, they have developed a suit that can cause itself to adapt to its surroundings. I think its pretty cool. MGS3 introduced the whole idea of camo in the series, and MGS4 upgrades its.
Remember folks....MGS is not real. Its not meant to be realistic. Its meant to be a game in its own world. And for what it has become since the NES days, I have to say that scrawny Japanese man has done something quite revolutionary. He introduced cinema in games....or revolutionized it.

I've played MGS games before....the ones in PS, MGS 1 and 2.....awesome stuff...it was genius!
I'm just saying that in this vid...I saw no bodies being hidden. They didn't even bother to. I'll take your word for it though. I haven't played any MGS since then.
