View Full Version : GTA IV Thread: Talk About it Here

I figure why do many threads when there can be just one.
-----------------
I'll start, there is a new feature found in GTA IV - the boot feature. Read about it here (http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/ps3/game/news/article.jsp?sectionId=1006&articleId=2007053014252347099&releaseId=20060308105930968037). Interesting, I wonder if this can reduce the wanted level since the body is now hidden from public view? Of course if a policeman spots you do it, the wanted level wont reduce, unless you gave him a hefty bribe.
Thats another thing I want them to change, instead of driving over the stars to reduce your wanted level, why not have your character be able to walk up to a policeman and give him a bribe (a la The Godfather). Keep the stars, as they are fun to chase for, but add this as well.

The clothing thing was another interesting tidbit. Games radar asked if blood would be available and then went further to ask whether clothing would soak up the blood, or if NPC's would react to blood. Say if the police saw you covered in blood, they'd freak out.

I just read OXM's July 2007 article on it and there are a few notable things:
- Along with no planes, there are also no bikes (no idea if that includes motorcycles). I actually liked the bikes in San Andreas, and NYC is a perfect place for bikes, IMO. Hate to see them taken out.
- Lazlow is not in the game (radio DJ)
- There is absolutely no connection in story or character between GTA IV and the rest of the games. This is an entirely isolated game from the previous GTAs. I always loved bringing back old characters, or at least expanding some of them. For instance, the Forrellis in GTA VC and GTA3. Toni Cipriani in GTA LCS and GTA3, etc....
- Water is not fatal; meaning you can still swim ;)
- The magazine quotes, "Though you shouldn't expect Rampages, eating yourself to obesity, or having to pump iron in the gym...." - does this mean Rampages are no more? In GTA SA Rampages were mainly multiplayer, but in previous games they were great. Also does this also imply character customization has been toned down, at least in physical appearance? While it was not a big feature of San Andreas, working out did help your character in some way.
- You can hijack locked cars.
- Forget Crackdown, Niko can climb as well and jump from building to building ;)
- Aiming system has been improved, it was more like Saints Row.
- No loading screens after the initial loading screen.
- The wanted level system will be completely different.
- Hear radios of other cars, basically how you could in Saints Row.
- The game will have areas locked off at the beginning as in past GTAs.
Thats about it.

ALso, German Gamepro and Australian OPM say this;
-ATM machines look to be accessible.
-Less realistic HUD stuff is being toned down like arrows showing you where to go. Could be substituted with Niko's gadgetry.
-You'll have a wardbrobe in your house.

I never really got into the GTA games that much. I think my favorite thing about them was that I could listen to 80s music in Vice City.
Maybe I'll read up on this one and see if it sounds interesting to me.

Its going to rock. Rockstar North is one of I think, 3 developers that have never disappointed me. Keep in mind R* used to be DMA Design, and I also count them.
The three developers: Incognito (formerly SingleTrac), Insomniac, and Rockstar North.

I own every single GTA game and I plan to own this one too.
I hope that you don't have to collect 100 hidde packages, 100 horseshoes, 100 oysters, 100 tag spots, etc. They also need to make it so every single time a car flips over, it doesn't blow up.
I hope they keep the driving and motorcycle schools. Those were challenging and fun at the same time. Also, I hope that they add Xbox Live play too! That would be so much fun. Anyone know if this is going to happen?

There is going to be multiplayer. But its not a simple deathmatch thing, I guess its similar to that of GTA SA (where its implemented throughout the game at points - Rampages in San Andreas).
I hope they keep the 100 whatever things. San Andreas had a whole bunch of shit to look for, and man it was great trying to find it all. I did eventually find everything without no use of guides. It takes away the fun, IMO, using guides.
I was so sad to see they dropped the hidden packages in SA, but instead they had a variety of different things to search for, so it made up for it.
I as well hope they keep the schools, or something similar to that. Those were great and challenging at the same time.

Well maybe they can actually make the 100 whatever things useful, like in Crackdown where the agility orbs raise your stats. Maybe GTA IV can do something like that.

The 100 packages were always useful. Each time you collect 10 you got a weapon to your warehouse (im referring to the hidden packages). And you got bonuses as well for finding the stuff in San Andreas.

Kudos to Big Isy for this info, which apparently is from a Turkish Xbox Magazine (I know, wtf):
1) When you move, there is a slight vibration with every footstep when you run
2) The HUD has been removed- no health or armour indicators, it is all visual- and if you have armour, you actually have a bulletproof vest which visually deteriates
3) Flamethrower and rocket launcher are still in the game
4) Explosions are larger than ever, and there is a mission in the game based on creating an awesome chain reaction of car explosions- apparently this looks awesome
4) Cars dont explode unless you blow them up- ie they wont explode if you just keep crashing or hitting them- you have to rocket launch into them
5) Niko doesnt get tired- you can run forever, it just wont be as fast as previously.
6) more RPG elements, ie - for a mission, you must catch the train at 7pm, and if you dont, you dont get to do that particular mission (they just gave this as an example, the scenario isnt confirmed in the game yet)
7) Gore is back and better, bullet wounds show, blood appears where you shoot people, they limp if you shoot them in the leg, and hold their arm if you shoot their arm. Apparently when you run someone over it is disturbing (but they gave no more detail)
No eating, girlfriends, keeping fit- but your skills do improve over time (driving etc)
9) Secret vehicles and “plenty of goodies” at 100% completion- no more details given (either not revealed or simply not known yet)
10) Land size is bigger than the 3 cities (not country) in SA put together
11) graphics are better than Saints Row- draw distance is literally as far as you can see
12) new trailer will be on the internet 28th of June
Only thing on that list that has been confirmed is #12.

Confirmed details from 1UP:
- There will be a total of 3 trailers (1 already has been shown, 1 will be shown this coming week, so there is 1 left)
- Opening loading screen could be as long as 10 minutes long (360 dev kit blamed ;))
No real big new details besides those 2. They do say R* keeps updating the RAGE engine, so by time the game gets complete it will be on the most up to date engine that R* created from scratch.

I'm extremely biased when it comes to GTA :grinking:
Its the one franchise where I want to beat it start to finish, and get the full 100%. Took me 2 years to get 100% on San Andreas. I dont use guides, cheats, or any of that shit.

I'm a little pleased with this announcement. I have soooo many games I am planning on buying that this definitely helps the wallet as you stated blaz. Not to mention it gives me more time to play the games I am getting this Fall and also gives me something to look forward to for next Spring.
On the business side, this sucks for both platforms but sucks worse for Sony. This was really the only potential system seller they had on the slate. With that gone, their holiday just took a big hit.

Analyst: GTAIV could best Halo 3's debut
Janco Partners' Mike Hickey says Rockstar's latest could "conceivably" ship 9.5 million in the first week, more than twice Microsoft's 4.4 million.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Oct 9, 2007 1:58 pm CT
In announcing Halo 3's first-week sales of $300 million, Microsoft called it "the fastest-selling video game ever." That record might be relatively short-lived, if a new report from Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey proves accurate.
Hickey attributes the success of Halo 3 to a growing fan base for the franchise, a general demand for high-quality content, and the game's release early in the current generation's life cycle. Those same factors will be playing into next year's release of Grand Theft Auto IV, Hickey said. In addition, the Xbox 360 installed user base will be significantly larger by the time GTA IV comes out, and the addition of a PlayStation 3 edition of the game should boost sales significantly as well. Putting those factors together, Hickey suggests that the market is generally underestimating the next GTA game's initial success.
With Halo 3, Hickey believes Microsoft shipped 5.2 million copies of the game for its first week of release, and sold through 4.4 million. That leads to a 67 percent attach rate (percentage of all console owners who purchased the game) in the US, Hickey said. He believes that rate dips to 46 percent when adding in Europe.
Although Hickey doesn't think Grand Theft Auto IV will sell to as large a percentage of Xbox 360 owners, he notes that the expanding installed user base for the Xbox 360 and PS3 could offset whatever shortcoming there is. Even with a projected attach rate of only 20 percent (which Hickey stresses is very conservative), that would indicate first-week sales for the game of 3.5 million units. Hickey seemed more comfortable with a 30 percent attach rate, which would suggest first-week shipments of 5.3 million copies. But there's also a best-case scenario.
"If the upcoming release of GTA IV attached at the same rate as Halo 3," Hickey wrote, "the title could conceivably ship 9.5 million units of [the] game in the first week, producing an astonishing $466 million in sales." In such a case, Hickey projects first-week sales of the game would approach 8.1 million copies.
