Gameplay, Graphics and Sound You’re Alan Wake.  You’re a successful writer looking for a quick vacation with your wife, Alice.  But as with all tormented writers whose work seems to come to life as they write, vacations are never dull.  While on vacation you lose your wife, get thrust into the darkness and then your journey begins.  And wow what a journey it is!  I can’t say enough about the story in Alan Wake and how it’s told.  You’re quite literally playing out the pages of a book that was written beforehand. There are several characters that play a key part in the story but none as entertaining as your agent, Barry Wheeler.  He’s hilarious and plays the comic relief.  The other characters are rather stoic and less involved from an acting standpoint.  They seem pretty dry. It was pretty clever to have Alan find pages from his manuscript that would reveal an instance that would happen moments after reading the page.  It wasn’t so much a horror story as much as it was a suspense thriller.  It was a dark “who done it” mystery that Remedy did a good job with.  In fact, being wrapped up in a twisted tale like this was one of the things that stood out about the game.  You’ll play it as much for the gameplay as you will to find out what’s going on. The gameplay in Alan Wake was pretty simple.  You’re armed with a flashlight and various other weapons.  There’s a revolver, hunting rifle, shotgun, flares, flash bangs and flare guns all at your disposal to rid the “taken” of the darkness that has taken them over.  Your flashlight of course is your most useful ally.  As a matter of fact any forms of light pose as an ally because they’re safe havens from the darkness and the taken.  You’ll eventually get better flashlights throughout the game.  Think of your flashlight as your aiming reticule.  Shine it at the bad guys and pull the trigger.  You can boost your flashlight’s beam with holding the Left trigger as you aim at the taken.  You have to keep it focused on them long enough to rid them of the darkness and then you can kill them with your revolver, shotgun or hunting rifle.  Yes, you can also simply shoot the flare gun at them or throw a flash bang. The effects of the flashlight and flare gun are done really well.  As you rid the taken of the darkness it casts a cinematic, slow motion effect that never gets dull especially when using the flare gun or flares (hold RB for flares).  I didn’t like the fact that you kept losing your flashlight, revolver etc. each time a new mission began.  I liked it even less when I would get a heavy duty flashlight or a double-action shotgun only to lose it.  But executing a long distance flare gun kill makes up for it everytime.  It’s a thing of beauty…you must try it.
