The Walking Dead Episode 3 Long Road Ahead Review

Rating Guide: How I Review Games

Review:

So far you’ve read what I thought about The Walking Dead Episode 1 and Episode 2.  I’ve enjoyed both episodes quite a bit.  As I take a look inside The Walking Dead Episode 3 Long Road Ahead, I’ll continue the format I used to review Starved For Help.  Again, because this is episodic content and Telltale Games is delivering a constant world, I didn’t think it would be necessary to review these episodes any other way.  I’ll focus on how the story has continued and any noticeable changes.  You can refer to my initial review of Episode 1 for the basic breakdown of gameplay etc.

With that said, let’s see where Episode 3 stands.

Narrative Continuation

I’ll just go ahead and say it right now.  Episode 3 Long Road Ahead was the best of the series so far.  There was one gripping, intense, emotional moment after another.  It was a roller coaster ride that was captivating from beginning to end.  The choices you’re faced with in Episode 3 are some of truly gut wrenching moments.  The scene that plays out between Lilly, Ben, Carley and Lee was one of the most shocking scenes I’ve seen.  As shocking as it was, it fit right in this world of chaos that the group has found themselves in.

And as unexpected a turn it was, it wasn’t the one that tugged at every inch of your emotional string.  All I can say Kenny my man I feel you but I don’t have the words to explain how you deal with a situation like he had to.  Telltale Games surely put everything they had into giving players a connection to the characters.  As I’ve played I found myself taking sides and then switching and then being confused at the same time.  It’s a wonderful thing.

The action in Episode 3 was taken a notch up above the previous two.  Lee gets a chance to really mix it up and get his hands dirty.  From the start of the episode you’re faced with a tough decision on whether or not to put a lady out of her misery or simply embrace the chaos and use her to your advantage.  After that you have to fend off a walker attack.  And then shortly after that you have to fight off a bunch of crazed bandits!  And then after that … I hope you get the point.

Episode 3 was stacked with the things that I love about this series so far.  It was stacked with all of the things that keeps The Walking Dead as the one game you can’t miss out on this Summer.

Technical Changes

I again ran into some delay and jerkiness in the game.  There are noticeable delays in the action from time to time when the characters pause and it seems the audio has to play catch up.  It wasn’t consistent but it was there.

Conclusion

The Walking Dead Episode 3 Long Road Ahead took the story and action to a new level.  The choices you’re faced with weigh heavier and heavier on Lee and his circumstances.  Having been faced with revealing his truth, you get a brilliant bridge between each episode and how every choice you make accounts for something.

I enjoyed this episode the most and that’s probably because with each episode, I’m getting more and more connected to the story.  Where Episode 2 faded with predictability, Episode 3 rebounds with a series of truly shocking events that make it an unforgettable ride.

Let’s go Episode 4!
