No used games on the next Xbox?
I’m sure you’ve all heard about this rumor but I thought I’d pose the question for all to debate. What if the next Xbox console had the technology to prevent you from using used games on it? Would you even consider such a console and would Microsoft really be so crazy as to do this?
Reports last week suggested that the next console would include some anti-used game restriction. Online passes are already running rampant in the industry to prevent sales of used games so it’s not a wild assumption that maybe the next step is to make the consoles not play used games.
Why would Microsoft even care when it seems like only EA, THQ and a few others are openly criticizing used games and openly trying to restrict them with their online passes. What do you say about all of this? Would you purchase the next console if it did not allow you to play used games?
I’m not even sure how they’d do this. Would game discs be marked in a new format? What say you?

I really doubt I would purchase a console if I could not play used games on it. I think Microsoft would be very stupid to even think of going down that road. I think Microsoft will leave it up to the game developer/publisher.

I guess I look at it from a bit of a different perspective. With digital distribution becoming more accepted, this could be the first step to ready people for it. I could see it being much more like the PC market now. You can buy boxed copies or digital ones.
Every company is doing some form of online passes right now, I’m pretty tired of all the different ways of handling it.
My opinion can be taken with a grain of salt though. I buy nearly all my games new and don’t really have a strong feeling on this either way. I always think the decision should be in the hands of the developer/publishers but I’m not sure MS is the kind of company to allow such freedom.

I won’t buy a console with this kind of restriction. If you remember, the Sony kicked this idea around on the PS3. Burning a specific code into a disc the first time it was inserted to bind that disc to the console.
I don’t think MS will do it per se, but I think the success of the online pass has paved the way for something more nefarious. What’s to stop EA from charging for a code to unlock the entire game if it’s used?

i can see that coming Gemini .. because as gamers we don’t stand for anything really .. we take whatever the industry dishes out. and that’s sad.

As long as they don’t do something like OnLive. The number of times my internet has cut out and I can’t play a game online is bad enough but to not have the ability to even play it offline would really drive me nuts.

Exactly.
As Microsoft can you GUARENTEE me 100% uptime on your network? Because with the way things are now, I can play my games offline 100% of the time if your network is down for some reason.
Also, next generation games will be big, maybe larger than the current 8gig on DVDs Microsoft is using. Do I really want to wait for a 10g, 15g, 20g, etc. download every time I get a new game? The hard drive would have to be massive. It’s ridiculous.

Could you imagine how much worse it would have been for Sony when the PSN was hacked and went down if you couldn’t even play games anymore? That could have possibly killed the brand. I don’t think MS or Sony would allow that to happen by choosing a service like OnLive. Only time will tell though.

there are rumors MS will go with bluray discs next gen.

Very bad idea… Gaming consoles breakdown (Microsoft should know) and having your games tied to a broken console would suck ass!
Also, gamers would buy less new if they can’t afford to buy a new game by trading in their used games.
Every action like this Microsoft will have a reaction.
January 30th, 2012 at 3:33 pm
That would mean that every xbox MUST be online to play any game… I could see them doing this for multiplayer games, but for single player games, a lot of people will tell them to kick rocks…
Then again, developers could post an update on launch day that would make you hit XBL for the update because “we released with a bug…”

Maybe I’m set in my ways but this ish is bunk yo!
You are gonna dictate to me how I get my game?!?!?! If it ain’t pirating it shouldn’t concern you! Used games: one gamer’s trash is another gamer’s opportunity for GS. LOL but seriously some folks only buy used to pinch pennies, I don’t think it is right.

Microsoft is totally trippin if they implement this poop dudes. I don’t even have to explain why this is a bad idea… Many industry’s have shot themselves in the elbow while getting to power hungry and stepping on their customers. Please don’t screw yourself video game industry, I love you. Learn from others boo boos….
Excuse me while I go surfing on some rad waves…..

I’m not going to lie. I will most likely still buy the next console if they implement this idea because I am a gamer and I’m always in for the next/best thing out there. I’m not new to the whole binding thing because the PC has been doing it for years and I’m also a avid PC gamer.
The only thing I ask is that If we install games onto the hard drive then we shouldn’t ever need the disk to play.

Oh I wish I could edit my post (Sorry for double post) But because the companies would most likely be getting more sales because the used market would come to a screeching halt then maybe games would drop in in price! Maybe 40-50 dollar average price for games? :3

I believe we may see games on demand only in the future. that would certainly make people only buy games new, as there is no “used” in digital games. Of course not everybody has a decent connection, but that would make more sense than making me throw a game in the trashcan if I do not want to play it anymore.

I think Gamestop would not support this and probably not even sell the next gen console. I probably would not buy it either.
