Sony has some real issues, distribution halted in Europe

In yet another hit to Sony’s already bruised ego, sales of their Playstation 3 have been halted in the Netherlands effecting supply across the European continent.

I’m sure you all remember the Blu-ray vs. HD DVD battle from a couple years ago leaving Microsoft with a piece of dead tech that will be collected like the beta max player.  At the time Sony was the victor and seemingly the owner of what was the next step in home media.  I for one didn’t realize they weren’t the only ones involved in bringing us the Blu-ray technology.   Fast forward to present day and what do we have?

Sony has problems in the form of hackers are waging tactical guerilla warfare on their network along with the now large scale battle being waged all over the world by LG.  LG has patent claims against the Blu-ray playback.  On the flipside Sony has filed claims against the smartphone tech.  These actions are not uncommon in the world of technology.  Everyone is always fighting to get the newest product to market first after which the legal battles  ensue.  The difference this time is LG has won a battle in the Netherlands.

While the country itself only accounts for 3% of Europe’s population it has been reported “Rotterdam [a Dutch seaport] and Schiphol [Amsterdam airport] are the main import points for PS3 consoles for both the UK and continental Europe”.  The decision itself only effects Holland and Sony could just ship elsewhere right? Yes, but it’s not as simple as diverting to another country.  The logistical nightmare involved in rerouting the shipping, finding storage, and the distribution of the PS3 would no doubt cost Sony greatly.

What it means in a nutshell is that Sony has some real problems in Europe not to mention in the US as well where similar suits have been filed.  So I have to ask you…does it seem like Sony’s roof is on fire?  Not only on fire but surrounded by a crowd of people chanting “we don’t need no water!!”?

What do you think about the latest blow to tech super giant Sony?

Pay it forward!
