Kinect, what’s your verdict?
Many of you have tried Microsoft’s Kinect since it launched last year. I was surprised to read about the near 8 million Kinect sensors that were shipped out and purchased. I didn’t expect the response to be so huge for the device but after playing it myself, I can see how people are initially intrigued.
In fact just the other day while in a local Walmart, my daughter walked up to an empty Kinect display. She already knew how to play and so she decided to get a quick game of Kinect Sports (bowling) going. There was no one around or even interested in playing. Pay attention this story is going somewhere. Almost immediately after she began bowling, a little crowd developed. This crowd wasn’t filled with kids but with older customers who were looking on with big smiles eagerly awaiting their turn.
Now the point of the story is that Kinect is one of those things you just have to try in order to understand it and see how different it is. Another small point is that these retail chains are doing a poor job of showing just how it works. Walmart isn’t known for having the smartest employees out there but still….have someone playing the thing or at least displaying how it works. Microsoft should look into that.
Anyway, I wanted to know what your personal verdict is on Kinect. You’ve read my own opinion of it a little while ago but I want to hear yours if you’ve tried it. And if you haven’t, why not? There are seemingly better and more hardcore games coming this year for it so it stands to only get better as far as software selection is concerned.
What say you?

I say it’s only been 3 months. Give it 12, then tell me if 8 million + are still actively playing. Or if those Kinects are gathering dust, like Wiis did within a year after losing launch appeal

I’m enjoying Kinect but its longevity is going to depend on weather or not game developers are going to invest in making games for it. I hope they do beacause there is so much potential for Kinect.
As far as retail, I think they need to assign at least 2 employees to work the Kinect station. It should be an easy sale if people are there playing it then like you stated people will pay attention.

There may be “better and more hardcore games” coming out for Kinect, but I still don’t think they’ll work that well because I doubt it’s as precise as using a good old fashioned controller. Also if they’re making games that you can play with a pad, and use Kinect if you have it, I still think you’ll lose something from them games, i.e. they’ll be toned down to allow Kinect owners/users to play them.
I suppose one of the first tests to this will be Forza 4. Lets see what feedback that gets.

it has most certainly taken the place of Rock Band as the go to thing to do when we have company over … it’s a total blast playing Sports with everyone … it even got a bunch of my friends to create their own avatars
