Multiplayer is where it’s at, not single player says EA

EA’s game label boss, Frank Gibeau, is seriously putting a fork in my potatoes.  In an interview with Develop, he says that the multiplayer aspect of games is where the innovation and action is.

“I volunteer you to speak to EA’s studio heads; they’ll tell you the same thing,” Gibeau continued, “They’re very comfortable moving the discussion towards how we make connected gameplay – be it co-operative or multiplayer or online services – as opposed to fire-and-forget, packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you’re out. I think that model is finished.”

I don’t know about you all but I don’t buy many (if any at all) multiplayer only games.  I do enjoy some multiplayer in my games but if that was the only thing to enjoy, I wouldn’t purchase it.

What say you?  Is single player dead and gone as we move towards the future?

Care to share the awesome sauce?

depends on the genre, if the game is a FPS or MMO then they would need mp.

I mostly buy games for the story, ( who’s going to base jump off a hi rise, chop up some zombies, firefight against aliens all in real life LOL )

I like to think of mp as a bonus to add to game. would be nice to see some mp extension after finishing the game.

Completely wrong. I buy most of my games for single player. Those are by far more entertaining than multiplayer but thats just my opinion. ELDER SCROLLS FTW!!

This guy is a SCUMBAG IMO. There is room for both. Maybe you can’t charge $60 for a SP game you idiot. Oh that’s right, EA wants to go DLC in every which way that can.

    Remember, Deacon ♥ EA LOL

For me it’s true, regarding shooters at least. With CoD and Halo I only go back to campaign for achievements or beating it on harder difficulties. And most of the time I only beat it on normal anyways. I play their multiplayer online on and on though. And shooters are always my most played games. I mean I love deep RPG’s like Oblivion or Mass Effect but I definitely spend more time on shooters. That said we need deep, single player driven games. I definitely could not imagine only games with multiplayer.

Okay. Here is my 2 cents! Personally I spend more time with a multiplayer game then I do with a single player game like Bioshock. For that reason I only rent Single player games and beat them to its entirety. That doesn’t mean that single players aren’t dead because there are still great single player games out there but the money is truly going to be with multiplayer and EA sees this and will focus on this more. I am glad about this because if you think about it would you rather pay for 25-35 hours of Single player (possibly more if you replay it but its not a new experience) or would you pay 60 dollars where you can play possibly 200+ hours and experience something different all the time because its not AI but people your are playing against.

i see a market for both, but personally i think i’ve invested more time in multiplayer games than in singleplayer games.

Original Gangsta when U360 debuted Went beyond 15,000 Gamerscore

I think it depends on the game that’s being developed. Some games are better off being single player (like Bioshock) compared to others (like the Call of Duty series). Developers shouldn’t be given the choice to decide. We as consumers can decide with our wallets if we want either single or multiplayer games.

If EA thinks so highly of multiplayer, they need to fix their online servers! Madden online really sucks! Sorry Deacon, don’t mean to talk about your boyfriends at EA. LOL

the best way to settle the offline vs online is just release the single player game for a set price maybe $30, then for people that want the multiplayer just buy a download
