TV on your Xbox, Cable companies vs MS…round one!
How many of you would actually consider your Xbox 360 console as a legitimate source for watching television? If it were possible would you ditch your satellite or cable company for the big black gaming box? Come on you know you’re foaming at the mouth to be able to “Kinect” and control your TV via your hands.
“One scenario under consideration by Microsoft is to create a new TV service on its Xbox gaming console that would establish a “virtual cable operator.” The service would charge a monthly fee for access through the Xbox to networks such as ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS, ESPN or CNN, according to two sources familiar with the plans.” – Reuters
I’m sure plenty of you will point out the increase in Xbox Live last month as a definite sign that Microsoft has more in store for its Gold Membership service. Could TV be that? I’d imagine that we’d see even more fees if this comes to be. ESPN is already on the console and various programs from different news stations as well. So this isn’t that big of a stretch to believe.
Read all about it though. What say you?

hmmm, very interesting. I would have to see the pricing first, but it does seem to be willing to cover the basics as far as channels go

I don’t doubt that it can and will happen. But it will be about how it goes down. Netflix has became a Juggernaut because it took customer feedback very seriously and evolved. They made it easy for any and everyone to get their service. The specifics will be the factor in folks ditching cable/dish companies. Most the folks I know would love a better option, especially price wise. I really want to talk about this on the show Saturday.

This sounds interesting… I would consider canceling my cable service once my contract runs out.

This is interesting but I heard there would be Hulu on the xbox.

This is an interesting idea for those that want to ditch their dish or cable provider. With Netflix, Hulu, and recently ESPN added Microsoft is making the 360 the one stop shop for everything. But with this change, I wonder will Microsoft increase XBOX Live subscriptions? I would hate to pay more for something that I’m not going to use.
Me personally, I just want to game on my 360!

ok 3rd try, this idea seems good but has many drawbacks. It will require bandwidth which is irregular at best these days. Unless you have fios you can almost guarantee buffering and blur.
Seems M$ is trying to squeeze it’s way into an already saturated market. Cox/Time Warner/Comcast/Charter/Armstrong/Direct TV/Dish Network/Verizon FIOS all carry bundles which when excluding basic cable tv service increases your internet fee. So what you save in cutting cable will be replaced by a larger internet service bill.
Consumers currently each have about 4 choices for their tv and none of them require buffering. I want my tv now and in HD. Buffering is for when I wax my car…

Everything on cable is slowly showing up online in sync with it’s original airing, once that happens for everything then I’m down with cable unless it becomes crazy cheap. I’m not interested in another cable like service, I have Fios already. I’m into Zune like services that let you buy what you want, Hulu, Netflix, etc.
If there was a service on the Xbox to get live premium channels (HBO,ShowHam, etc) for a cheap price since those seem to be the only channels with content not online until WAY later, then I would get it and ditch Cable while viewing the shows I dig online.
I just don’t understand why Microsoft would want into a crowded market that might flatline soon thanks to most of it been available in HD online already.
I live in an area full of competition and choice for service providers, I just remembered before I hit submit lol. I can see how this would be awesome for people paying crazy amounts for service in areas where there’s only one choice for a provider and that one sucks ballz. I can see how this can be good for others out there.
I’m gonna stop my essay now….
