Kinect versus PlayStation Move

Remember that one time when most of you said that the gaming world wasn’t ready for the “motion era”?  Well, a few million Wii’s later and an E3 2010 later, the world better get ready.  With Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s PlayStation Move arriving this year, I figured a little versus action was in order to see how they stacked up against each other.

So let’s see which is the better value when you put Kinect vs PlayStation Move.

Price to get your motion on

Kinect – $149.99

At this point the $149.99 price is unconfirmed but there are a wide range of sources and websites that have already taken the lead to list the price to expect.  Microsoft of course is waiting on the PR department to simply send the press release that focuses on the “value” that Kinect brings at that price.  Allow me to paint a picture of that press release for you based on my Truth Serum article about PR.

“At $149.99 we believe that Kinect is the consumer’s choice when it comes to value.  At this single price, you don’t need any additional accessories to enjoy the great line-up of Kinect games.”

I believe it’ll go something like that don’t you?  It’s the only route to take if the price remains the same.  I wonder how these Kinect bundles will turn out.

PlayStation Move – Motion controller ($49.99), Navigation controller ($29.99), Move bundle includes EyeToy camera, Move motion controller, game ($99.99)

Most of the games for PlayStation Move according to Sony will only require the Move controller wand, the camera and nothing else.  You can substitute the little navigation controller with a regular six-axis controller.  That would be awkward with a Move wand in one hand and a controller in the other but it works.

The panic at price comes when you realize that some games will require two Move wands plus the fact that no one games alone these days so you’ll likely have to buy at least one additional Move wand.  Price will be one of Microsoft’s biggest arguments against Sony’s PlayStation Move when trying to sell Kinect.  It’s obvious isn’t it?  If you assume people don’t have a camera already and they don’t want to navigate with a controller, you’re looking at roughly $210 for you and a friend to enjoy a Move title.  You’ll need the bundle plus another Move wand plus two navigation controllers so $99.99+$49.99+$29.99+$29.99.  It gets pretty damn expensive eh?

Better value – Because I’m not an algebra major and because I really don’t care to provide for anyone’s experience but my own, I’ll give the nod to the PlayStation Move.  I could add up Kinect in multiple rooms and end up at $300 so we’ll just do value based on the initial entry point.  You can argue it either way so to prevent any headaches let’s just keep it simple.  If Microsoft is forced to price Kinect at $99.99, then clearly it moves up as the better value.

I prefer the Move. Doesn’t mean I’ll purchase either of them though.

IF (and that’s a very big IF) I purchase either of them I would go with Kinect. 1- I like XBL for connecting with my distant friends and I would think that Kinect will be a lot of fun friend wise further down the line. 2- My kids will love it 3- It is controller free technology which is something i don’t have right now. Besides, I already have a wii for wii-mote game play which is what Move really is… a duplicate.

Since I don’t have a PS3, I would have to go with Kinect. They have a lot of potential with the fitness and dance games. I hope they can come up with more games to support it. It would suck to spend $100 or more dollars on this thing only to have a small handful of games.

PS3 Move = Wii in HD except they wanted their controllers to look more like dildos.

Kinect = awesome except they’re releasing shitty games at release.

    conclusion: ill get Kinect when

    1. they introduce core games for Kinect (Fable 3, maybe an FPS, ME3??? lol, etc.)
    2. all the shitty games released alongside Kinect dive bomb in price (which will probably coincide with core games [actual games] being released for Kinect)

I probably go with Kinect since it is a little more family/friend friendly. Definitely easier for people to get into.

For me it’s a hard choice right now.

I had the eye toy back on the PS2 days. Even the xbox Vision cam was simmilar to the eye toy. Kinect reminds me of both of these.

I like kinect for the fitness and dance games. I do hope they can do a good job on star wars game. a Shooter or RPG game would also be nice. also the voice reconition is a new feature that i don’t see in wii or PS3.

i like move for Sorcery ( who doesn’t want to play as a wizzard? )and Heroes on the Move,( 4 of sony’s well know mascots )

I don’t like the idea of having to use double wands = more price

i still say that move will cost more on a single player experience. more items to collect dust when not used. while kinect is just the camera itself.

i will wait and see for a price drop or special deal somewhere. I would like to get kinect mainly on the reason there is no extra parts to buy.

LOL This question is brought up on a Xbox forum so most people I think would prefer the Kinect over the Move.

I think Playstation did a better implementation in motion controlling then anything that I have seen. I was impressed with the 1 to 1 movement that they demonstrated. Plus the games look more like the the ones I would play. However I’m a lazy gamer and I enjoy sitting on the couch with a controller, hell I get winded playing Rock Band.

Talking about buying additional controllers. Was anyone ever annoyed with the different configurations of controllers you need to play a Wii game? Balance board, 4 player game needs 4 Wii motes, Oh, Nope this game you need a Nunchuck too. Are you shitting me? I just put the Wii in the other room so when people come over they don’t have the temptation to play it.

That is the same reason why I’m not digging the PS Move. When I heard that some game will need to Wands I wondered how much that would be (49.99per Wand x 7 wands = $349.93 + 99.99 Bundle = $449.92 ok 29.99 per controller x 4 = $119.96 + 449.92 = $569.88 total). That $150 price tag doesn’t seem that bad now.

No doubt, Deacon. Even if I do get a Kinect I doubt I will use it to play game most of the time. I think I would use it more to navigate the menus. Which seems kind of sad I think.

it’s not sad but navigating doesn’t seem all that fun to me or fluid. the people moved so slow trying to navigate the dash. i want to do it without having to move like a turtle. hopefully they fix that.

I’m not into this motion control crap but Sorcery actually looked like a lot of fun. That alone blew away anything MS showed for Kinect. Videos of Socom 4 also looked pretty fluid. Still, it’ll take a lot more than that for me to buy Move.

As for Kinect, I saw nothing interesting nor redeeming about it. I fall into the “core gamer” demographic and I just don’t see how they could build a core game around this technology. Seems like they are having enough trouble building casual games for it.
