Online Pass initiative begins, more pay to play online publishers

It has begun.  Remember the uproar about the EA Sports Online Pass which outlined their intent to make you pay to play their sports titles online if you buy the games used?  Well it seems like the entire industry collaborated behind closed doors to form a unified front against used game sales.  Ubisoft and now THQ have stated their plans to force those of you who buy certain titles used to pay for a code to unlock online play.

UFC Undisputed 2010 will support the Online Pass initiative.  Multiplayer content for UFC Undisputed 2010 will be available via a one-time code included with the game at purchase. Codes for accessing the content will be available for second-time buyers for an additional $5 (400 Microsoft Points).

Ubisoft hasn’t detailed the list of games they’ll be using an Online Pass with.  I guess cutting game manuals isn’t quite enough cost saving for them.  How many more publishers will opt to partake in the Online Pass initiative?

I guess these publishers and developers can’t spend the millions that they already make quite fast enough and they need a bit more so they’re trying to tap into the used game market in any fashion they can.  What say you?

Be awesome and share the link!

Damn, I wanted UFC2010 too. Going to pass on it now though since I planned on getting it used down the road.

This is a turn for the worse. I was hoping other publishers would wait and see if this would hurt EA’s sales, but it looks like they will all be doing it soon. Think about people who rent games! This is not a good thing for the industry. It sucks.

@JPsmooth42, I did not even think about people that rent games as I never do. I do borrow them occasionally though.

What is even worse, is if your household has more than one Xbox. Does the pass transfer from Gamertag to Gamertag on the same Xbox? It is getting more and more towards a “You do not own what you purchase” policy, which is crap!

Multiple consoles, multiple accounts, heck even going to a friends house could limit a game a lot.
