Community Speaks – Blur beta thoughts
Here’s what to know about the power ups:
Shock
The equivalent of the blue shell in Mario Kart, makes 3 vertical pillars of electricity come down at random spots in front of the unlucky person who is currently in first place. Evading these 3 pillars isn’t all that hard in most cases but when hit you are slowed down considerably. And if multiple people use Shock, be prepared for a lightning field which is sure to get on your nerves. No alt fire.
Barge
Imagine you’re driving at 200 mph on a straight road with 2 cars next to you, one on the left of you and one on the right. Wouldn’t it be great if you could smash them into the crash barrier? This baby lets you do that and more… the most special effect of barge is the removal of almost every power-up currently around you. When there’s a mine in front of you or a shunt chasing you no problem, let it come close, fire off the barge and you’re safe to continue you’re quest for the Break-neck award and first place! No alt fire.
Shunt
A red target-seeking orb which blows up the person in front of you? Do want. Shunt is also one of the power-ups you will find most useful. It’s a good fire-and-forget weapon and a pain in the ass for the person in front of you. When you get a flashing bar at the bottom of your screen then you’re being chased by one of these bastards, you can shake these off at the last moment by quickly evading it with some awesome pro-steering.
Bolt
Bolt fires non-seeking missile-shards right in front of you, yes you have to aim with this one. But don’t be afraid, you’ve got 3 of them with each power up you get. The effect of bolt isn’t too stunning, it slows down the person you hit and makes them lose grip. But it can be a lifesaver on straight ends. Alt fire shoots these shards backwards, making anybody think twice about driving right behind you.

Nitro
As the name implies Nitro gives you boost, lots of boost. This of course is always helpful. Using multiple Nitro’s gives you even more speed. Think twice about doing this in a corner though. Alt fire lets fire the Nitro in front of you making you lose a lot of speed real quick. I have found no real use for this yet though.
Repair
Straightforward as can be, this repairs all damage to your car, making it shine like never before, and of course helping you: not-get-wrecked-when-hit-by-more-of-those-damned-shunts.
Shield
Shield conjures up a bubble of electricity, which makes everything look a bit bluish and all of the sound muted. For a short period of time you can shield bolts, collisions, 2 shunts, 2 mines or 1 shock. Watch out though, full frontal collision still stops you. No alt fire.
Mine
Ah, the Mine, my personal favorite. When using the mine you drop an orange black hole ( yes, you didn’t read wrong, I really said that. ) right behind you, you can hit multiple people with the mine and as soon as you hit someone they sure wish they had a shield. Nothing too special really when you think about it, but when you master the alt fire of the mine power-up you’ll be blasting through people in no-time. Alt firing the mine lets you shoot the mine about 30 meters ahead of you.
If there is someone in the path the mine traverses, you blow them up. But that’s not all. If you aim carefully you can even place mines in front of people when coming up in a turn or when you steer slightly to the left or right. With this the mine is one of the most powerful and useful power-ups in the game.
Mods
Blur features an option to give your car a modification; these mods all have 3 powers each. The powers themselves are small in scope as far as I could see, but they give you some customization which is a great feature. These powers vary from getting more fans for each shot you fire, getting a random power-up at the start of the race or giving you more range with Barge. Want to play aggressively? Take all the attack customization you can get. Want to get loads of Fans to level up quickly? Do the same but this time with all the fan boosting mods. Think of these mods as ‘perks’.
Challenges
Blur also has loads of challenges in the game. Use a lot of shock and you’ll get one of the shock challenges. Evade a lot of shunts? Or did a lot of alt-fire awesomeness? You’re sure to be rewarded for it.
Game awards
At the end of every race, three game awards will be shown. Game awards range from getting the highest top speed, to evading the most shots at you or even negative stuff like falling off a cliff too many times.

I really like the beta. It has been especially fun with more people. I’ll probably at least rent it.
