Monday is Paranormal, Birthday Week
It’s Monday and things are a bit weird today. Not only did the Cowboys manage to win but I woke up to news about some very clever marketing making millionaires out of a very average movie. I’m excited about it because it helps me do what I do with my own little gig. Paranormal Activity wasn’t even as good as the Blair Witch Project but managed to do the same thing. It was a low, low budget movie but behind a word of mouth marketing campaign it brought in millions of dollars.
I know of 5 people who fell for it and all five said the same thing…the movie was a waste. This has been your marketing knowledge for today. Perhaps someday soon FiftyOne Marketing will be behind a massively successful campaign that brings in millions of dollars. (win!)

In other news, Borderlands appeared to have created less of an impact than I thought. Usually when a title is huge, my friends list is buzzing with people playing it. However, at most I counted only 5 people playing the game at any given time. When Halo 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare released, my friends list was filled with players of that game. So what gives? Bad karma?
At any rate, I hope you all had a good weekend and are prepared for a good week. My birthday is this Thursday, October 29 so yeah….bring on the birthday gifts!!!

I raise my glass to FiftyOne Marketing, in the hope they have that success

Nice post buddy, makes me want to finish that review even more….lol. I do agree finding coop players has been a chore and it does pose the glaring question…did gearbox tank their marketing on this game..my simple answer – yes..the game is good, buzz is bad hopefully we can change that around here at least.

Since I’m a 50% shareholder in Fiftyone Marketing, I believe we could’ve pushed Boaderlands to higher sales
. I’ve only seen a couple of commercials about it and that’s it. I think its coming out at a bad time due to Modern Warfare 2 on the horizon. That game will be the new crack!!!
I’m not mad at Paranormal Activity success. The buzz worked to their advantage. Still trying to figure out what the big deal is.

#1. As Gamerskills pointed out it came out at a bad time. Timing is KEY
#2. I haven’t seen much marketing for it, even though it DID receive good reviews
#3. I told people the economy has finally started to HIT gamers. I would expect good sales for only well known, or highly anticipated, heavily marketed games.
#4. This holiday season will be very interesting
That’s all I have to say, tune in tomorrow for my next analysis.

So paranormal had brilliant marketing. They only opened where they knew they would get money and to a crowd the desired their product (win and win). As far as the movie itself- it wasn’t THAT horrible. ‘Bout as good as the SYFY channel weekend B movies. It had some cool parts and pretty good actors for a low budget flick.
As far as learning from it’s marketing- there was much to obtain from that.
Borderlands will most-likely pick up in sales since it is a pretty good game. But you make a valid point that timing is a bit off. In this economy many gamers have to be very thoughtful in how they spend their money on games.
As far as your birthday goes… Jesus called and said he wants his sandals back! (I just had to :p )

Is that what you would like for your bday? And do you really want all these fine people to read about your fetishes all out in the open like that?

daaaaaaannnng, deac is a bad boy apparently

First of all Deac… Stop hating on Borderlands! Just because it’s not an EA, or Crapcom games doesn’t mean you should show your bias. lol
Sales will be very good for Borderlands due to word getting around about what a great game it is. Basing how good a game sells by just your friends list alone is not the wisest thing to do… Hell, if that was the case, I would say most 360 owners are not playing games on 360 at all… We know that’s not the case.
About that FiftyOne marketing… Are you joking? = I sure hope so.

@Mike, you don’t have friends apparently LOL. watching your friend’s list is a good measure of how hot a game is. but then like i said, your friend’s list is obviously not as diverse as mine
October 26th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Yours is full of 360 fanboys… That have no clue what a good game is. They buy Microsoft exclusives (Like Halo) or be a true sheeple & buy CoD whatever. lol
Hell Deac, even you were hardly on. = IN YO ACE!!! lol

I want Borderlands ever so bad, but my wallet is ever so skinny…. :’(
The people I know that saw it loved it but the atmosphere apparently is what helped make it good. It was a packed theater filled with people that scare easy and yipped out of fear lol, everyone fed off of that and enjoyed it.
By Teh Way: Hi guys I love you and bacon is awesome…..

@ Mikewarrior, I’m on Deac friends list and I’m not a 360 fanboy and I do know a good game when I see it. As far as good games, it depends on the likes/dislikes of the gamer. I like Modern Warfare and I will be getting Modern Warfare 2. And I think Halo sux so I have to agree with you on that one. But again, opinions are like a$$h@l@s, everybody has one.
Always a good rant from you Mike!
