Xbox 360 Beta, Homie Say What?
It looks like our friends at Microsoft are hard at work prepping the Fall system update as fancy new icons have been spotted on the Gamercards of several Microsoft employees. Long time U360 veteran and Microsoft XNA Publishing Platform Team member, GreenLantern4, has been keeping a tight lip on what’s going on. But that didn’t stop me from using his Gamercard as visual evidence.
Joystiq seems to think it’s a new testing program running throughout Microsoft that involved Avatar awards. That’s a good theory and probably one that is likely true. You remember the Avatar Marketplace that’s coming right? If you look closely enough at GreenLantern4′s Avatar, you’ll notice he’s pimping a Halo 3 shirt currently unavailable to us “regular folk”. But for those regular folks out there who fancy something a little bit more “real”, you can get real Halo T-shirts delivered to your front door.

What say you? With this new program comes the inevitable day that we’ll have to shell out some Microsoft Points for Avatar clothing. Microsoft is getting ready. Are you?

sounds cool. as long as it does not involve any real dough i dont think it can do anything but help

I feel soooo violated.

lol @GreenLantern We see you…. O_O
It would be nice if they turned our gamer score into something finally because I’m damn sure not paying for fake shirt or something to put on my fake avatar…… I would maybe buy a U360 shirt lol but come on, please no real money for fake tings. If i can’t load up my avatar and find a level to explore in my shirt or coupons for REAL cookies (pop tarts also?) then this will make me cry at night. Microsoft does want me to cry right?

Yeah, they’re going to charge MS points if you want to buy the clothes. There’s a screenshot where an avatar is playing with the RC Warthog prop, and the price for it is 320 MS points. Who knows if the price will be lowered, but for now it looks like we’re going to have to pay.

i’m not gonna buy a virtual car for 320 points.

There is no way I am paying for avatar items, but it would be cool if game achievements were linked with avatar stuff. For example, it might be cool if an avatar could be dressed in full MJOLNIR Armor if one beats Halo Reach on Legendary. It would be instant recognition for a likely difficult achievement.

I’m still trying to save points to finally purchase Braid and Peggle…
What I do hope is that new wear is released for those who had accomplished more than 75% of most of the games. Would like to wear the Indi hat and whip…

Deac… I think I know what it is.

spill the beans Mike.

Well Deac… My gut feeling is that it has something to do with an Avatar store like you suggested, but so much more = I’m thinking an Avatar world (I.E. Sony’s HOME) that will have far more things to do inside it.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
an Avatar world? i’d hate it. i think i’d use it about as much as i use the Avatar. which equals…not at all lol. but i do think it’s cool to unlock Avatar stuff via gameplay.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
You wouldn’t hate it if there are many games tied to it, to play along with people you know… People will also show-off the Avatar collectables they unlocked via their achievements = This could be a big money maker for Microsoft, & another thing to draw in the casuals.
I hope you know how I feel about something like this… Lets say I hope it’s not true, because this is one thing I would love to be wrong about, but how else will Microsoft make it so people can show-off their Avatar stuff?

An avatar store is such a horrible idea, I honestly don’t see how it can make money either? I hope you’re wrong about that though Mike. I don’t want a ‘second life’ on my console, games are already my first life lol. Avatar gameplay unlockables ftw though

wow interesting… I would love to be able to unlock goodies for my avatar but I really dont see myself using points for it.
and I don’t like the Avatar World idea either, I hope that you are wrong too Mike. well I can see that getting abused and becoming something that it was not intended for.
