The “secret” announcement that was dangled in front of us last week dropped this morning. Along with it my jaw dropped as well.  The video is available here and is a 436 mb download, but it is well worth a look.

The first installment of the Lost Planet series made most shiver with its arctic themed warfare and monster based aliens.  Plus who doesn’t love mechs?  While it was a good game the real story was the rich online play.  I logged many an hour trying to get as many post grabs as possible and piloting a wide variety of mechanized pain bringers.  Capcom added 3 multiplayer map packs that are free on the marketplace if you still own the game and generally supported their game well as usual.  Now it’s time for the next installment.

The game is powered by Capcom’s proprietary engine, the MT-FrameWork 2.0.  Global warming is in full effect, meaning that the snow has now melted, revealing lush jungles.  The game’s story will not just concentrate on the main character like the first.  It will show different Snow Pirate factions and their different motives.

Lost Planet 2’s gameplay will include many big changes such as portable shields like Gears of War 2 and mech robots with passenger seats and turrets.  Director Kenji Oguro is on record saying “After we released [Lost Planet], we heard so many users say that they wished they had been able to take on the Akrid enemies in a co-op mode. You should be able to see our response to those requests in the trailer you just saw.”  Judging from the video, co-op is confirmed.

Not sure what more you could ask for from powerhouse Capcom.  Co-op mechs, great support, and add-ons down the line.  Sounds like another win for gamers.
