360 Price Drops, New 60 GB Announced
I’m not going to say I told you so because that wouldn’t be right. You all can now say that you knew about this months before anyone else did. Microsoft just announced a $50 price drop on its Xbox 360 Pro console making it $299. (US and Canada) And they even increased the hard drive from 20GB to 60GB making way for a new 60GB SKU at $349. Sound familiar?
“While the Elite won’t see a change in its 120 gig offering, the Xbox 360 Pro will see an increase in its hard drive from 20 gigs to 60 gigs.” - Call Me An Analyst, U360

I’m sure some of you are wondering about the 20GB being sold “while supplies last”. The smart thing for Microsoft to do here is use this as a reason to eliminate any Xbox 360 SKU being without a hard drive. I expect this will happen in some shape or form. If not, then this “price drop” will have very little effect and certainly not close to the effect they are likely expecting.
This isn’t the last of the adjustments. What say you?

People expect the “Arcade” SKU to go by the way-side, but at the same time - having this ‘fire sale’ on the 20GB’s is going to make the Arcade even less attractive.
I think they should’ve reduced the Arcade even further (just take a huge loss on them to clear them out), then worried about the 20GB.

The thing is the price drop is not for the 60GB, i don’t no if you knew that deac or i am reading it wrong. The 20GB are $50 down but they are stopped on production and the new 60GB are still $350 like the Pro was.

I would’ve rather have seen a permanent $50 price drop for the pro. I don’t think an extra 40 gigs is going to make people want to buy an xbox compared to a a ps3, but I don’t know. To me the current Pro @ 20 gigs is plenty. I use my xbox only for gaming though and Microsoft hasn’t done anything that makes me need a bigger hdd yet. If I download an xbox original for example, I’ll just delete it when I’m done with it if I want the space. I can always download it again later. I’ve never had to delete anything for space concerns though.

@No Hands, that’s right. the 60GB is $350.

Get rid of the Arcade SKU and keep the 20Gb version as the low end model. That way developers can finally utilize the Hard drive and incorporate it into games finally. (faster load times)

Do want…

@goon, agreed. it’s mind bottling really that they’re going to keep the Arcade around. i hope not.

I went out and picked up the 20GB Pro at Best Buy for $299 and price matching the Target $25 Gift card deal.
The second 360 will be a nice addition, especially since when “VP2″ comes out, I would have lost all my time on the 360 to my wife’s addiction.
Now we can ’share’ and by ’share’ I mean have our own 360s.

No mystery with 20 gig going away, they are stoping production on those drives. Get rid of Arcade (No HD SKU) and then what do you expect to do with all of those HD on the shelf? Base model is sold to those who don’t need a HD or those geting started and looking to get a HD later on.

I told you so, Deac.

MS didn’t do enough for the price of their console. 80 gig PS3 for $400 sounds like a better deal compared to a 60 gig xbox for $350. This is from a purely hardware pov obviously. I still prefer the 360, but MS just got raped on their 60 gig announcement.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
@Dreaded, i agree. that $399 PS3 80 GIG was a good one.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
The 80 Gig Ps3 for $399.99 is cool, but Sony would have been better off keeping the 40 gig and dropping the price to $349.99 because the average public cares & knows price better than comparing Hard Drive space. I have a good feeling that once all the 20 Gig PRO 360s are sold out, Microsoft will keep the $299.99 price for the new 60 Gig SKU… Anyone want to take that bet?
July 17th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Is no one taking that bet?
July 17th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
i’ll take that bet i guess
