Showcase - Silent October
Ready for more inside scoop on the guys and girls gaming it up in the community? Although silence is usually golden, I’ll expect a loud roar with this one as we were born in the same month.
Put your hands together people and dig in.
Outside of gaming, what is your world like?
On weekends, almost religiously, I can be found putting for par (often one over par) on the lush green of one of my local disc golf courses starting around 7am on Saturday (and occasionally Sunday) mornings.
I recently finished a year of school studying Neuromuscular Massage Therapy. That consumed my evenings twice a week and about ten Saturday mornings for our mandatory “internship” clinic. I’m soon to sit for the national certification exam (NCE) and will shortly thereafter be a licensed practitioner. My plans are to work in a chiropractic or sports club setting.
Since ’99, I’ve been doing freelance print and web design for small businesses and individuals with the need for a powerful and dynamic web presence. I continue to operate in a part-time, self-driven capacity while maintaining my other job…
I am a stay-at-home father to an incredible little ninja-kid named Ian. I left my career with a technology firm for the bottle and diapers. It was the best decision I ever made. We spend our days mashing buttons on my 360 controllers, taking backpack hikes around the neighborhood, and mid-afternoon excursions to the local parks and playgrounds.
Evenings are a toss-up between gaming it up on the sofa, going out to catch the latest and greatest comedy flick, veggin’ out on the vastness of teh internets, or just getting some work done.
Tell us how you came up with the Gamertag Silent October.
Once I got my 360, one of the first things I did was re-launch my Live account. I had the favored opportunity to start anew using an entirely new and unique identity. So, I sat in front of my television, controller in hand, on the keypad screen for creating a gamertag and I thought about several things, and tried several combinations of words, wanting to stay away from using tacky numbers or slang. My gamertag was to be memorable and actually say-able.
I drew upon the personality of one of my favorite comic book heroes, Deadpool, who as you may know is extremely talkative and chattery, much like myself. So I threw the ironic twist of “Silent” in there, to give the impression that I am anything but silent then the October part came into play naturally, as I readily invoke the Libran qualities of my birthright, as I was born in the tenth month and there you have it!! Silent October was born!
Describe the set up for your Xbox 360.
I received a 360 Elite for Christmas ’07. I picked up an extra controller along the way – both wireless and black, of course. I stacked the 360 Elite upon my original XBOX (just in case I want to stir up any nostalgia) and jacked it up to the 42” 720p HDTV via the HDMI port. That’s about as elite a setup as I could hope for on the budget we’re running on.
What is a normal gaming session like for you?
When I play solo lately, it’s been a GTA4 marathon of rampage and destruction. Before that, I would trot around on horseback in Two Worlds for hours on end trying to haphazardly mix potions, complete missions, and slay beasts.
When I kick up Live or have a friend over, it’s Gears of War all the way!! A game of Halo 3 or GRAW2 creeps its way into rotation occasionally too.

What do you like the most about the Xbox 360?
I love that I can play wirelessly. True freedom!
If you could bring any game to the Xbox 360, what would that game be?
Excite Bike.
Name your least favorite game and why.
I honestly haven’t played any bad games on the 360 yet. If I had to pick a least favorite, it would be Halo 3 – it just doesn’t have the excitement it once did when it was fresh & new on the original XBOX.
What is the craziest thing you have heard on Xbox Live?
A kid yelling back and forth with his mom about playing past the time allowed. Funny stuff.
Do you play for gamerscore or achievements?
I was under the impression that for every achievement you obtain, your gamerscore goes up so in a perfect world, wouldn’t one achieve a higher gamerscore by simply obtaining the coveted in-game achievements in the first place? In short, I play to play but if I had to choose, I would pick achievements because it feels good to achieve something, doesn’t it?
Okay. One Shot. Who are you playing, what game you are playing, who wins and why.
Who: my wife; Game: Tetris (360); Winner: me (of course); ‘cause I’m a Tetris MASTER! (j/k – but I am really competitive).
Any parting words?
Namaste, you guys.
