lol @ Carbon. they're welcome to comment but it would be nice if people would take some time to read all the other comments that have been made.

we've already established the intent and purpose of this article and we've already established that at some point i may revisit this to give a more in depth look at all the different types of engines used in games.

Ok there is a little issue with this article. Havok and Euphoria are not game engines!!! Havok is a physics engine it only deals with game physics and id not a full game engine. Euphoria is an animation engine that focuses on character animations and again is not a game engine. These systems are used together with the game engine to help the quality of the game.

very nice comment vecima :) thx. glad you read the post. there are quite a few new games using Havok (Ironman for one) and Source has done great things for the gaming world. i just hadn't seen any new games using Source so it wasn't that i forgot or was trying to do an injustice to it at all. :)

it was just a quick list of a few..definitely not all types of engines. but i have extended an offer for a few to help on a more in depth piece if interested.

I'm not interested in badmouthing the author of the article - it is somewhat informative, but i feel that to selectively talk about what engine "your favorite" games are on, while leaving others in the dark is a bit unfair.

I'm partial to the Source engine (i'm making a half - life 2 mod on pc), and feel a little put back that you didn't even mention it by name. yes, source uses havok as it's physics driver, but it's heavily modified. most games using havok don't play like source games. it's a long term technology. from the release of half - life 2 in 2003 to the third expansion still in development, it is highly supported, constantly updated, and (more relevent to this article) used in more titles than just that one. in addition to the half - life franchise and portal, the game drives team fortress 2, and on pc counter strike and day of defeat. it also powered Dark Messiah of might and magic, and at least three upcoming titles:
-the crossing (by the might and magic crew)
-left 4 dead (by turtle rock and valve)
-untitled game (by none other than warren spector's junction pointe studios).

now, i understand how some people can consider source "old", but when new games are still coming out for the engine, and there are already several titles available, i hardly feel like it should be skipped. i also understand that this is mainly an xbox 360 article, but i feel it's worth mentioning that counter strike: source was the number one online game for quite some time, though the game never left the pc market.
