Flashback - Brute Force

Time for another Flashback.  Out of all the Xbox owners out there, there shouldn’t be many who don’t remember this title.  Brute Force was perhaps the most controversial release for the original Xbox because of the mixed reception that it received.  The marketing behind it lead everyone to believe that it would turn the gaming world inside out but critics and gamers alike saw something much different.  Digital Anvil did a great job in my opinion because I was one of the few who really enjoyed Brute Force.

Flashback Game: Brute Force
Released: May 1 2003
Platform: Xbox
Next-Gen Meter: High

Although it fell short of delivering the ground-breaking experience, I really want to see this game done on next-gen consoles.  Or has it already been done?  You could make the argument that it has some similarities to Gears of War and many of the current squad-based games.  If you imagine Brute Force on steroids, you’d probably get something close to a 4-man playable Gears of War.  Tex was the original “muscle bound male” on the Xbox.  I’d love to see Flint, Hawk and Brutus all shine in a next-gen format.  Flint was the cyborg sniper of the crew and she was hot on top of that.  She had a sniper rifle with a hardcore scope.  I think the coolest of the crew though was Hawk and her cloaking ability.  Check out the Brute Force Experience to see an awesome little setup detailing the game and characters.

You’re not alone, Deacon. I loved this game and would absolutely embrace a sequel.

Gameplay was OK, visually though it was really good.

yeah there are a couple of people with original Xbox consoles still. maybe the Flashback will showcase something of interest for those that still have an Xbox.

Good game with friends system linked, but what poor design to the point of pathetic comedy… The levels were way too linier/boring & nothing felt different between each one. The characters weren’t very creative & the voice acting was sickening… The game was a failure, & that’s why they never made another one & Digital Anvil (The Developers) were dispersed by their owners = Microsoft.

There is a good reason why games never get sequels after the first, second, fifth one fails… Do you know?

oh yeah it was an epic fail. still would like to see it remade though. not gonna happen..just wishful thinking.

kinda like wanting another Rallisport, Crimson Skies, Psychonauts, Enclave etc.

At least Crimson Skies/Psychonauts & Rallisport 1/2 were critically acclaimed games that are loved my most Xbox fans (Unlike Brute force)… Microsoft would be smart to get more installments of these. It’s these kind of games that the 360 is sorely lacking. Gears replaced Brute Force.

@ Mikewarrior: Without Halo, BF would have done a lot better. I thought it was a good game. It suffered mostly from being incredibly over-hyped. Nothing could have lived up to the multitude of expectations. So, yes it failed, but under abnormal circumstances. Also, successful games don’t get sequels as well. Metal Arms: Glitch in the System is an example of a successful game that never got a sequel.

Is this one not a title that will play on the Xbox 360? I thought a majority of these would work on the 360 by now.

Brute Force was alright. I remember all the hype leading up to it and then it just kind of disappointed. It was fun with some Co-op but anything past that was boring and lame.

I’d love to see someone try a similar concept (Each person has their own special powers kind of thing) in another squad-based action game like this.
