HD DVD Player Now $49.99
Ignore the fact that there are people and websites around saying that there’s no point in owning an HD DVD player. I’m here to tell you that there is a point and with a $50 price, it’s beyond a steal especially when you consider the 5 free HD DVD movies offer still applies. You can find the price at Best Buy, Wal-Mart and other retail chains. Naturally, going forward there won’t be much, if any at all, production on the format but that doesn’t change the fact that there are still several movies in high defintion worth owning.

I don’t think that Toshiba or Microsoft or any HD DVD supporter somehow magically stopped all existing movies or players from working. Call it what you will but I just purchased my mother one. There are quite a few movies in high definition that she can now enjoy for a ridiculously low price. We’ll cross that future HD movie barrier when we get to it. For now, I plan to enjoy this price and investigate the catalog of movies-to-own soon.

A cool thing is the creation of your own HD content. If you can record an produce your own shows in HD, then snap your set. Yes a nice collection of existing titles is available and its hard to beat that price. Snap you can play standard DVDs through it too, so its going to be a nice player in that respect as well. Will I buy, more and likely not, but its very, very tempting at this price point.

Anyone have the 5 free movies link? I thought it expired in early Feb or something?? Or is the form in my box? (I just picked it up over lunch, haven’t had a chance to open the box!).

Like I keep saying, its a smart purchase if only for the intention of just playing dvds. It keeps the wear and tear off your game drive if you just so happen to watch an extensive ammount of movies.

here’s your form link Nu.

Even at the low price, I doubt it will sell well.
February 25th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
if not, it’ll just get lower..woot!
February 25th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
You’re the man, Deacon. Thanks for the URL!

::longs for new medals::

I think its just a way for retailers to clean out their inventory. There’s only a small handful of movies that I would want to watch that are on HD DVD that I can watch either on satellite or DVD’s that I already own.
If your a huge fanboy of HD DVD (like Mr. DeaconBlade 360) its a steal!
February 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
i’m a fan of HD. let’s get that straight lol. this is crazy for any HD enthusiast. there are a ton of HD movies on HD DVD and this makes it a steal. i’m buying American Gangster on HD DVD today.
and just an FYI, both versions (HD and SD) of the movie come on HD DVD. one of the other cool things about the lost format.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
@DB, its the best feature of HD sad we can’t get more. Would be cool if Blu-Ray started providing that option.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
I’ll buy it when it drops to 10 just for Planet Earth….lol..
February 25th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
I really wish I could afford this right now, but I can’t. Damn bills.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
@TX, Blu-Ray can’t do that since the discs are created differently. That was one of the big selling points of HD DVD. It is impossible for Blu-Ray and DVD to be on the same disc, at least as far as I know.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
that is a great idea but i dont got the money right now
February 25th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Heck, for that price I might just pick one up as a backup for my internal drive, since I do use it to watch movies sometimes. At least it would take *that* load off my 360.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
@knight, yep..it upconverts standard dvd’s as well. so you can always use it instead of the 360 itself.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
MMMM… It wont do me any good because I don’t have a HDTV so noooo thanks. Next!!
February 25th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
The silver lining in this whole thing for me is that I should be able to pick up HD-DVDs on the cheap pretty soon!
February 25th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
If I could afford to get the player and all the movies I want in one shot, I’d get it for sure but I just spent all my money on a computer. XD O and can I have a “Tips” Medal also DB? Remember the 3 new Xbox originals? I’ll send you gold lol.
February 25th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Great news, though I bought mine when it was 129 dollars, soooo… I feel ripped off.
*ponders returning it and buying the cheaper version at a different store*
Naw…

I think I might get one for the DVD portion of the HD-DVD player to minimize wear on the main drive. And for $50, it’s not too bad of a deal.
February 26th, 2008 at 10:27 am
gonna pick up Beowulf on HD DVD
February 26th, 2008 at 11:48 am
$50? That ain’t too bad. I might pick one up.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Picked one up last night; local Fred Meyer store had 2, one had a bad seal, so I got the other one. Tried out Terminator 2 on DVD on it last night, and it looked even better than through the player in my 360 (I didn’t know it upscaled, thanks, Deacon!). $50 well-spent! Sending in my “five free movies” form tomorrow; might pick some others up at Amazon.com since they’re all on sale (Transformers is only $19 there, fwiw).

my mom LOVES hers. she let out a big “wow” when she played King King HD.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Bought one last night. King Kong looks amazing. Now I just have to fill out that form for the five free movies.
