In Other News: PS3 Goes White & No More 80GB?

Yes, we all like to pretend this isn’t a fanboy world that stirs all kinds of rumors about the “other consoles” to speculate about but we know that’s not true.  That’s what ‘In Other News’ is all about.  There is a world outside of the Xbox 360 and I feel obligated to keep you up to speed on the more interesting things that occur on the dark side of that world.  The power of ‘In Other News’ compels you!

PlayStation 3

Word on the PS3 Fanboy street is that Best Buy has decided to discontinue the 80GB model of the PlayStation 3 and only carry the less-than-stellar 40GB model beginning Monday, January 28.  Best Buy is a rather large chain and this begs the question of whether or not other retail outlets will follow suit.  If you’ll remember, the 40GB model of the PS3 lacks backwards compatibility, has only 2 USB ports and lacks memory card readers.

Are there plans to introduce a price cut for the 80GB or even a more robust PlayStation 3?  Who knows but if you were to believe additional rumors of a white PS3 coming to stores soon, then anything is possible.  Yes, I said a white & black version of the PlayStation 3 is the latest news; both rumored to cost $299.

What say the world on this?  What say you on this?

I really don’t like anything gaming wise that has to do with sony. I think their TVs and cameras are great though.

Gimme a silver one and we’ll talk. Black is done, Wii and 360 are already white… shiny silver? That’d be cool.

Thought just crossed my mind: I hope Nintendo goes back to their classic/original grey/black/red someday. That would be awesome!

I have a 60GB PS3, so the ability to play any PS2 game I want along with the PS3 titles means TONS to me.

    Although I’m sure they’ll sell a ton more PS3s at $299!

40GB @ $299? With no backwards compatability, I won’t buy it. But if they keep the ‘big one’ and put it at $399, I might at least CONSIDER it.

    20GB (w/ BC)
    40GB (w/out BC)
60GB (w/ BC) <— by far their best seller.
    80GB (w/ BC)

I would consider a 60GB model, but looks like I’ll be scopin’ ebay for that bad boy. Good thing I don’t really want one - but again, if the price is in the $350-$400 range, I would consider it.

If this is true and the price really is only 299 then MS is in trouble. They are really going to have to do a serious price cut because I hate Sony and the PS3 and for 299 I will actually go out and buy one.

MS really has no business being priced anywhere near the PS3 when it doesn’t have wi-fi or Blue-Ray/HD-DVD.

IMO MS has had some success because of great games and now they are getting a little cocky. They think they don’t have to drop the price. However there is a big difference from when PS3 cost 200 dollars more than the 360 to now where the PS3 might actually be cheaper than the 360.

There are a lot of PS2 owners waiting to buy a console. I couldn’t imagine them passing up a PS3 when it’s cheaper than a 360 and at the same time has Blue-Ray and Wi-Fi.

well a price cut on the ps3 is awesome regardless especially since it makes the price point easier to swallow later on when blu-ray becomes dominant which for now it actually looks like its going to be.
