Who let the idiots out to play news reporters? I have such an enormous lack of respect for most news these days and this just adds to that lack of respect. People always tend to look for something to blame for their shortcomings as parents or journalists instead of pointing the finger at themselves with a big “FAILED” on the end of it.

I wanted to hear the opinions of everyone on the recent Fox News report about “full digital nudity” in Mass Effect and how it’s being marketed to kids. They aired a so-called discussion about the game that included journalists and resident gaming stud, Geoff Keighley. The news report cited several ridiculous claims that it appears new publisher, Electronic Arts, has taken offense to and rightfully so. IGN has the story and response from EA for you to read. EA has asked for several corrections to what Fox News aired.
My opinion on this is that it’s amazing how the likes of Fox News can get away with sensationalized media and endorsing people who obviously know little to nothing about Mass Effect or games in general. Many of the journalists were still posing questions about Pac-Man. Wake up! The days of Pac-Man have long since gone and technology has long since improved.
Geoff did a good job pointing out that the reporters haven’t even played the game thus making any opinion of it moot. I’ve played it and I didn’t encounter any full digital nudity or feel like I was trapped in cyber porn. (maybe I need to request a refund because that would’ve been nice)

Well as of right now, Fox still has a link to the SexBox piece on their website, so it seems that Ea hasn’t fazed them. It was a horrible piece of journalism. I think, but highly doubt that EA should seek legal action against Fox News for slander. What will probably happen is that Fox News will never air or even post an apology or corrections. Mis-statement of this type is very common for the very Right leaning (I thought the news was supposed to be unbiased) Fox News. Unfortunately, whenever wrong statements are pointed out to them, they are almost never acknowldged.

This should be tagged as truth serum
Anyway I’m glad you gave your opinion on Fox’s ridiculous behavior, and I think that EA made some very, very good points.
Yes, that’s right I’m agreeing with EA and rooting for them…I feel so dirty
January 24th, 2008 at 9:42 am
i thought about a truth serum tag but this was such a no-brainer ya know. and that’s crazy coming from you to agree with EA lol
January 24th, 2008 at 10:29 am
that article was way out of line,
i am glad someone who would be heard has stepped up to put this into place.

I saw the video and it’s just ridiculous. There is no way if I was a reporter I could go on air and say things that are not true or I had not seen for my own eyes. Someone needs to send the reporter a copy of Mass Effect sit them down and force them to see what they just reported on. All I can say is the reporter must be all about the money and care less about the content they report on and how they report it. What made me mad too was the talk about Microsoft’s parental controls. They do work but they shouldn’t be used solely instead of parental responsibility for your kids. I will say this my children are not on Xbox live and I removed the parental controls off of their accounts why cuz I am an involved parent who knows what my kids are playing.

tomorrow i’m going to travel to fox news office, and i’m going to burn it down. WITH ONLY MY EYES OF HATE, BURN FOXNEWS, BURN.
I’m going to stare your office down into rubble.!! MUAHHAA

The whole Romantic plot scene doesn’t even show up till near the end of the game, and you still have to go through some heavy dialog to activate it because its an optional scene ( Not part of the main game at all FOX!). The scene itself is very mild and PG13ish…see for yourself here

The biggest problem with the mainstream media reporting on video games (and many other subjects) is that there is no ACCOUNTABILITY. Just one false accusation by a politician and Fox news does a full piece on the game without even checking the facts! Its “journalism” like this that continues to justify my skepticism of the media.
January 24th, 2008 at 11:18 am
i wouldn’t doubt if EA or BioWare or someone is preparing a Mass Effect swag bag to send to her so she can actually play the game. that would be great. send her a 360 and Mass Effect with a tutorial and encourage her to play it lol
January 24th, 2008 at 11:44 am
I was speechless a few days ago when I saw it and I’m still am. To have people in that position do no research and be so ignorant and spread lies to parents who watch them. I also think MS needs to take action for the ‘Sexbox’ title and attempting to represent the console as a pornographic median for kids.
January 24th, 2008 at 11:45 am
I think we should flood them with mail forcing them to realize the mistake the made..
January 24th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Your all wrong!!!! I’m ten and I played Mass Efect including the sex scence.
I don’t know about real life so Mass Effect taught me that if I have a conversion for a few months (while saving the universe) with a girl we can kiss and hug each other naked
:) . I now think girls are objects like the news lady said! Also a study was done somewhere that these tings are true! We have seen no poof and have seen no evidence but they said so and they are a COLLAGE! So what they say is golden! It’s kinda sad when we live in a day that if you say a study was done on T.V more than 0 people belive it with out wanting solid poof…. but I’m 10 and a dumb shit so I believe it all
.
P.S. I’m not 10 and this was all Sarcasm lol.

January 24th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
^^^^lmao DB…and I’m really thinkin about sendin an e-mail to fox news myself as well…this kind of thing really makes me angry…the video game industry never gets the respect/attention it deserves from the retards that “claim” to understand in mass media..
January 24th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
If anyone has seen the actual fox clip, or if you haven’t go here
The internet decided to see how she liked her methods of reviewing games applied to her books so her books on amazon have now been reviewed with mostly 1 star and comments along the same lines as hers during the Mass Effect piece on Fox.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
as i was saying, sexxors with pansexual blue tentacle-haired aliens >>> fox news.
January 24th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
O no you didn’t DB lol. I was thinking of sending something to fox also but they are gonna take our letters give it to Dr. Phill, he will do a study, then “See proof! Gamers are angry people and they need to send me moniez to help them!” Then the time space countinum will implode then we will all look like cookies O_O
January 24th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
This is what I wrote on scorehero
“For gods sake! “Whatever happen to Atari, pinball, and pacman!” Has this lady been under a heavy bolder for a decade? That guy from spike did a good thing and was still cutoff by the others!
“Have you ever actually played mass effect”
“No, I trust research much more”
Someone give me a truckload of stones, as I watched, I lost brain cells… A game that shows the smallest bit of PARTIAL nudity for 5 seconds deserve an AO rating? Go look at the list of AO games and compare them to mass effect. One question though, who was watching fox news as 2 am?”
January 24th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
wow..Cooper Lawrence has the wrath of all fanboys upon her at Amazon lol
January 24th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
I cannot stand when the gaming industry gets bashed on by idiots that have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Its almost as bad as trying to get help from the Xbox support crew that doesn’t speak English.
January 24th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Soooo…much…hate…and…rage!
Really, usually I can point out my anger in a well made post, but this one just get’s me so raged I can’t even think straight.
January 24th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Idiots.

People need to play the games before making idiotic statements
January 26th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
The psychologist they had on as an expert has since acknowledged her mistake, but Fox News is still snubbing EA.
January 26th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
the podcast today made me feel better about this subject knowing everyone was on the same side.
