Remember the note to Xbox Live subscribers about a free Live Arcade title? Major Nelson spreads the word today that Undertow will be available for free next week from Wednesday, January 23rd until Sunday, January 27th. That’s an 800 Microsoft Points value being made for free. (to those of you who don’t have it that is) I’ve played it and it’s a pretty cool game and in fact one of the best in the Xbox Live Arcade in my opinion. It looks great.
What say you of this peace offering? Those of you who have the game already are encouraged to call Xbox Support next week.
[Update] - I called Xbox Support and was told that those of us who have the game already would be credited 800 Microsoft Points. Some have already received the credit while others, like myself, were told to wait until next Wednesday to receive the points.

yes im happy with that, i’ve considered buying it, but because all my points are already spent, i haven’t had a chance to buy it yet. This will be goooóóood.

Not great timing for me… My Xbox 360 just went down with the 3 Red Lights (seriously, about 10 mins before this post
Considering the time it will take my xbox to be shipped to the repair center, be repaired, and be shipped back to me, I will definitely miss the window to get this arcade title free… I guess I will have to wait to fing out if Microsoft will still give me this title for free when I get my xbox back in late February to early march…
January 18th, 2008 at 11:44 am
i don’t believe there is a window reaper. you should be good.
January 18th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Good, I really wanted to get Undertow even before it was going to be free…Thanks
January 18th, 2008 at 11:52 am
I don’t have this game but always wanted it, so I’m happy
. I thought they was gonna release Rez and make it free but I guess that’s just being greedy XD
January 18th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Aha!, And what did I say when I called in to the show?! It would either be a crappy game or some game we already have!
*Stomps around the room pissed*
January 18th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
scratch that reaper. there is a deadline. Wed - Sunday is when it’ll be free
January 18th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I own all the XBLA titles. I keep reading call support, but no one has actually said what will be going down. Am I getting a 800MS point refund?
January 18th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Reaper if possible take your HDD to your friends house and Download it then you will have it.
January 18th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
I’m cool with it, but the call thing could work still. I mean what if I wasn’t cool with that game. If you call and complain, they might credit your account with 800 points or if you already have it. Just depends on the stand they would want to take. I’m speaking from a Customer Service point of view, you never know and if I had it, I would be calling an asking for an 800 points credit. Looking forward to Wed, got the demo and loved what I saw of it.
January 18th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
beyond it being unattractive for those who have it…Undertow is really a pretty good game. it looks great and it plays pretty good. not amazing, but it’s a very decent title.
January 18th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Wed-Sun!? Ouch, no undertow for me
January 18th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
@ Rhyme, Thanks for the tip! I’ll try that out.
January 18th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
for those of us that have the game…
on the GSB post John P did say that if you all ready have the game you can call support and they are “ready to deal with you”
@Reaper - yeah its Wed to Sun, you can probably download it at a friends like Rhyme suggests, it wont be linked to your console so you wont be able to play offline (but you can always try and get that resolved later on too, since you have a valid download of it which was “paid” for
January 18th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
I expect ALOT of hate towards MS about this..I for one and happy, but having to call support if you already have UT is going to cause a stir to say the least…I’m amazed that they just didn’t make a new wednesday arcade DL free instead…that way avoiding this problem altogether…oh well…
January 18th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
The game is very cool and its one I’m looking forward too, I haven’t bought and this works out great. Still if it didn’t appeal to me, that sounds like a situation that would be handled over the phone on a case by case basis. As for Reaper, I’m sure you can call them up and get the title well after your system comes back.
January 18th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
After all this talk of lawsuits and constant problems with the hardware you`d think they would want to do this right, at least. I personally don`t have the game so I`m fine, but for those who have already purchased it, I feel for because calling support is a hassle all on it`s own.
January 18th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
The bonus for everyone who already bought Undertow is that there’ll now be a lot more players available for multiplayer matches on LIVE, which almost makes it an extra game in its own right.
January 18th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
just got off the phone with Support and they’re dishing out 800 Microsoft Points for those who already have the game. yay for me and anyone else that have it already *thumbs up*
January 18th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
DB are they giving you the points now or wait till Wed. This is great news, can I ask who you spoke to? Most people at customer support have no clue. Also did you buy this game or did you have a code, and will that make a differnce?
Those poeple at 800-4MY-XBOX take months to get updates. The last RROD I had the guy had no clue about MS extending the warranty 3 years. I had to call over and over again for about a month before they finally sent me a coffin.
January 18th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
btw I am still having problems with xbox Live today. Maybe it’s my ISP but I can get online fine with my PC. Now the dashboard is okay but when I go into any game I am automatically signed out of live.
This morning I was playing Bankshot Billiards 2 (BB2), and trying to unlock some achievements but no…….I was unknowingly playing the trial version of BB2 b/c when I go into any game I am automaticaly signed out of Live!
January 18th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
yeah Support can be “challenging” but it appears they’re being informed of what to do because the initial rep had to verify with a level 2 supervisor before letting me know about the points.
they’re going to give 800 MS Points in credit for those who have the game already. it didn’t matter that i used a redeem code. some have already gotten the points and others like myself were told to wait until Wednesday.
bottom line, it appears that a simple call to Support will please those who have the game already.
January 18th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
If you buy the game today, can you get 800 points next week? lol… I’m trying to figure out how you would come out on top doing that… just seems like double dipping, but… either way… you’re back at the same place. lol
January 18th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
lol…never thought of that Nu….not too shabby of an idea
January 18th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
xbox live is having some hiccups again. My dashboard doesn’t want to work, because its still loading xbox live etc.
But as soon as i get online with a game, everything works on xbox live. except for the dashboard still.
January 18th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
I was PO’ed when I saw the title of the article. But I kept reading (comments too)…Soufizzy much calmer now: HOO-RAY for an extra 800 MS Points to my account!
And yes, I agree w/ DB…Undertow is good (Much better than the “rough” version I played at the GSB Road Tour last year). And will be even better when playing peeps online. Unscripted Nights, DB?
January 18th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Ok but why one game?!? Give us a choice of ten games to pick from. I’m thankful but it’s not good enough. Step ya game up MS!
January 18th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
wtf bbq omg Undertow? lame-o this suxxorz and is teh ghey!! i want a mercedes for my Live downtime wtf lol
January 18th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
How will they make it available to us? Through the XBOX Live messaging?
January 18th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
For the duration of time they`ve specified the game will be free. Anyone able to get onto the Marketplace will not be charged for the download.
January 19th, 2008 at 1:33 am
The call to Xbox Live support was not helpful. I was told that upper management has changed thier minds on this and an update will be issued for those who already own the game?
January 19th, 2008 at 1:47 am
Hmmm, credit or not to credit for those that have it. Cool to hear that they are looking into this.
January 19th, 2008 at 3:18 am
yay another free xbox live arcade game, free xbox arcade games FTW!
January 19th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Yeah I hope the give thoose of us who have it something else…
January 19th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I think it’s a pretty sweet deal…def. better than nothing.
January 19th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
i agree with echo. Its better then nothing and it looks like a pretty good game. I love playing my arcade games when live isnt working good and/or i have no single player games left.
January 20th, 2008 at 12:04 am
Undertow really is a cool game.
January 20th, 2008 at 2:15 am
lol…I had to respond to this (I just saw it), Echo you’ll never catch me dood…
January 21st, 2008 at 12:18 pm
