Bungie Studios Goes Independent
Sometimes I marvel at how I get these things right when the interweb starts spinning with rumors. In my recent article, Bungie Leaving Microsoft – So What, I predicted that this was nothing more than the usual “we want to explore our creativity” type of thing. I submit to you the following quote from my article.
“They may have a case of the “big head” disease and want to all form their own little independent company that allows them to better showcase their creativity etc…” said Deacon.
And now I present to you the words from Bungie Studios in today’s press release detailing the Bungie and Microsoft separation.
“This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games,” said Harold Ryan, studio head for Bungie.
Sound like something you’ve already heard? I simply say good luck to them but if you read the rest of my original article, you’ll understand where this all might lead.

Crazy… did not expect the news to be announced so soon. Something tells me this was in the works and someone let the cat out of the bag. Just great, now we got to tell everyone the Cat’s out of the Bag!

So according to some of you (Deacon included) the company just days ago many were calling the best developer ever will fail or not produce anything of note now that they have shed MS? Nice loyality there guys. I hope they can produce something good, maybe even better as a game. The $300 million in the first week will be tough to top but I don’t think topping the game itself is all that impossible. If Crysis becomes the new measuring stick and Bungie starts there as a basis for something new it’s very possible in 2-3 years.
I don’t know what media rumors are being suggested as to why the split but I saw this as MS letting them go for their own reasons. Anybody disagree?
with all the great titles slated to come out between now and whenever GTA4 comes out, I think the 360 and its gamers have nothing to worry about.
Agreed. I don’t even have time for Bioshock or PGR4.

Man, Sirharper is banned from the forums and he still finds a way to stir the sh%t. LMAO.
At the end of the day with MS still having an interest in the company I would not count on Bungie making anything for Sony or the Wii just yet. The DS is another matter and I would suspect that Windows and Xbox will still be their brands of choice.
The only thing this changes is what is on paper and the ability to allow Bungie to have a little freedom in dictating projects and timelines. MS isn’t stupid and Bungie will not be allowed to dev for a company that MS feels they are in direct competition with. This is pretty much a non event and is good for MS and Bungie.
BTW, comparing Crysis, a game that will take all the computers in NORAD to run at its best setting to Halo 3, a console game is pretty out there if you ask me. I would expect Crysis to blow it away visually since it technically has a much higher ceiling than a console game on standard hardware.

Your banned also Aero, and you can’t refrain from stirring more stuff up. For the love of all that is holy, please drop the squabbles between you two.

HALO DS baby I cant wait..
This is good news, MS will retain all current and FUTURE IP rights. A developer going independent is nothing new and is being blown out of proportion by many of the Sony trolls.
WOW people banned from the forums, I didnt even know..

Just stating my opinion Speed. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

You never know. According to a certain fansite by a person in this thread Crysis will be playable on a 360 and the console has more than enough power to do it. Maybe a NORAD example is an exaggeration.
I’ll restate the fact that I said Bungie is indie now because MS wanted them to be, for their own reasons.
If that belief is considered stiring the pot for some, whatever.

Here’s the link from the fansite claiming Crysis will be ported to 360:

I’m not ruling it out but by name only. It’s plausable to me they could release a stripped-down “lite” version for consoles. A simple glance at the system requirements shows the game is beyond console. Couple that with the publisher and EA both saying it’s not happening (again let me say that could simply mean not in the same form):
