When you think about it though, in those movies you just named, other than Rome which I never watched, all used some form of CGI in them to make it more realistic. For safety sake some of the fighting action was CGI but it was not CGI for the sake of adding groovy effects like 300 does.

The art direction, choreography and camera work are all gorgeous. It's all about the visuals. And the spearing. When someone gets speared, oh boy, do they get speared ;) There are a lot of criticisms about the use of slo-mo in the battle scenes. I actually thought this was a nice touch. Too many movie cheat these kinds of scenes with fast editing so it's refreshing to actually see just how badass these Spartans are in combat.
