User-Created Content…When?

Remember with the launch of the Xbox 360 and its Microsoft Points system, there came an annoucement that someday users would eventually be able to buy and sell their own content amongst each other?  You don’t remember?  Let me refresh your memory of it with a clip taken from a Microsoft Points article on Xbox.com.

What About User-to-User Transactions?
Though you won’t be able to do it for a while yet, Microsoft eventually wants to enable Xbox Live users to buy and sell user-created content, which could prove to be the heart of the “micro-transaction” system. So, hypothetically speaking, I could create a new skin for Project Gotham Racing® 3 and use that skin when I win a tournament viewed by hundreds of gamers in spectator mode.

Big champion that I am, everyone who sees my skin when I’m racing wants it. I can then (again, hypothetically) post it up for sale in the Marketplace at, say, a dime’s worth of points. Other users can get the skin for the price of a piece of candy, and I earn more points in exchange.

Is their anyone besides me who would love to score some points by selling my own creations?  I’m a designer by default and I love to design things be that in Adobe Photoshop or perhaps on a cool user-creation tool within an Xbox 360 game.  So, I’d almost certainly make use of such a feature if ofcourse it ever comes to be.  Perhaps I’ll try and hunt down Ben Barker to see if he has word on where this issue stands.

I can see guidelines being posted before this becomes active.  Much like the Achievement guidelines a few days ago, there could be some rules for users who plan to utilize a feature like this.   Or perhaps user-created content could be limited to things like maps, skins and gear for your character.  Maps could go for no more than 250 Microsoft Points, skins  no more than 200 Microsoft Points and gear for no more than 150 Microsoft Points be that a buy or a sell.  With this ofcourse, you limit the price craziness between users.

It could even go so far as to be patterned behind the XNA subscription structure where you could offer user-created subscriptions that would enable those who purchased it a buyer/seller license.  Users who paid perhaps an additional $50 would be identified as having the ability to create and buy content.  I’m just tossing ideas around what once was a novel idea.

This topic hasn’t been given any attention that I’ve seen.  What say you?

I always figured we wouldn’t really see this system hit big time until the launch of the next Xbox. It’ll be pretty cool when it happens.

I want user created content also. I remember in an OXM interview J Allard said that it would start some point and VelocityGirl – remember her? Hopefully it happens soon. In an interview with Epic they said it was possible they think and they were working with Microsoft on it.

J said that it was more of a view of the future, not something we’d for sure see sometime soon.

Myself and a few people I work with could probably make a living making themes, maps and gamerpics if they let this happen!!!!!! I’m all about it.
