Xbox 360 Holiday Sales King?
Who’s your daddy? Apparently in terms of console holiday hardware sales, the Xbox 360 pwned the competition. Early reports from the NPD Group are being cited around the web today claiming the Xbox 360 topped both the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3.
Holiday Hardware Numbers:
Xbox 360 - 2 million
Nintendo Wii - 1.8 million
PlayStation 3 - 750,000
These numbers are up to debate I suppose until official numbers are released. I’ll get with the NPD tonight to see if I can get my hands on some official numbers but early reports are promising for the Xbox 360. As you can imagine, the Xbox 360 community has already circulated the news so I’m sharing it.
*edit - NPD Group has stated the reports of these numbers was erroneous. Stand by next week as numbers will be available then.
The 360 is doing pretty poorly when you put the figures into context. The Wii is without doubt selling a heck of a lot more, and after its been out 12 months I can guarantee it will have sold double of what the 360 has managed thus far. It is the fastest selling console.
I certainly wouldn’t say 360 is doing poorly but people keep wanting to overlook the fact that MS also missed their sales target for 2007.
Gates, Ballmer, and Moore ALL CLEARLY and repeatedly stated a goal of 10 million by end of year.

write this down. the Wii won’t continue this trend. it’s been a few months..it’s the new ‘it’. but it has no staying power. it’ll always be just a secondary console…which was brilliant of Nintendo to pitch it as…they’ve never went for it being your primary console…smart.
but still, i think it’ll slow down as months come. that’s the key to things…consistency. do you think the Wii can consisently sell 4+ million consoles every 2-3 month period?? no, it won’t.
that’s the struggle for the PS3 as well. can it consisently sell at $600…not that it won’t sell..but can it consisently sell at that price and still expect to gain ground on the Wii and 360? no, it won’t.

I agree with most of what Deacon just said. I don’t know why people keep mentioning Wii on equal footing with 360 and PS3 in “the console war”.
I do not agree with his assessment though that Wii stands no chance of outselling at least one of the other two (if not both). What does it matter if it did? Does not mean Wii won “the console war”? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!
This “console war” will not be won by selling the most units. That might win the fanboy war, but the console battle will be settled at the bank. 360 has positioned itself to to generate the most revenue with it’s offering. Does that mean MS will make a profit on it’s gaming division? Probably not! Remember the previous Xbox program (which never made a profit in any quarter) was hundreds of millions of dollars in the red…then 360 was developed and the wave of red ink swelled even more.
Write this down kiddies…
PS3 will sell more units.
MS will lose the least money. THAT is winning “the console war”.
Wii will sell alot of units and in the end gain little to nothing for it.

lol that may be true about the Wii gaining nothing for selling a lot lol i just see it as basically suffering the same fate as the Gamecube…it’ll be cool for a while but in the end, there won’t be many titles beyond the first party ones to keep it in the forefront.
remember..Nintendo is always the least expensive console yet it’s never outsold the PS2 etc. this generation will be different i think.
still, it doesn’t matter much. if you have the console you want, then it doesn’t matter much.
but it is rather interesting to talk about haha
