Episode #20 - EA’s John Doyle on NFS Carbon Content
Welcome to Episode #20, a special edition show before I head out to the Lost Planet Summit. Coming up in the show is what you’ve all been emailing about…a sit down with John Doyle, Online Producer for Need for Speed Carbon. He took some time out to chat with me about the Premium Unlockable Content (PULC) that has the community in a frenzy. You remember PULC don’t you?

A lot of good information and a look inside the strategy behind it was revealed. One note that I thought was pretty cool…John used to work for Microsoft Game Studios. So he’s definitely fit to speak on the Xbox Live Marketplace and all things Carbon/Xbox 360. So here we go…sit down and enjoy the show!

Stop whining guys! If you don’t want to invest the time…invest the $$. Yes, you bought the game but you don’t have to spend another dime on it. I love it - I have a career and a life so no time to play. I can pay for it and get the chance to enjoy it as I would never get it otherwise. Great idea - now I can play with my friends who spend lots of time to unlock stuff. How are they nickel and diming you? You don’t have to pay…just shut up and play! This game is a blast and the canyon driving is cool. Get over it–they gave you options, not excuses. The EA guy sounds cool - thanks for giving casual gamers a chance to get some cool unlockables without having to play 24/7.

The point is, the Xbox version gets to have those unlockables for free, and they also pay $10 less for the game, that is why people complain.

I’ll listen to get more clearification from EA but i love need for speed series. I just dont know if there is enough here to keep me happy and warrent the 59.99.
I mean loved Most Wanted and i am still playing that game, is Carbon that much better or that much of a step up from Most Wanted?!?

I guess you missunderstood me. My point was; Why should they make money off of somthing I have already paied for? If i want to unlock them by code because I don’t have the time or the skill, that is my business. They shouldn’t make a buck because I am lazy. They should make a buck because they have added something to the expereince. I like that fact you can pay 10 dollars and “upgrade your game” to the limited edition. That is adding to the current version that you have. Charging me cause I am lazy is totaly different.

[...] Racing into stores today was EA’s next entry into the NFS franchise, Need for Speed Carbon. Along with the release came Premium Unlockable Content (PULC). PULC is content that already exists on retail disc and can be earned by playing through the game or paid to unlock the content early. I want to stress that you can unlock this content on your own without paying any points for it. [...]
I’m scared to see how EA destroys what is one of my favorite game series, Burnout. They’ve done a pretty good job so far, let’s see if they can totally kill it with 5, then my boycott of EA will even include Burnout.
I recently rented Carbon for free, and I never actually put it in my system for the 6 days I had it. Need for Speed used to be my favorite racer, like Burnout is now. Thanks EA.
duh!!!… if you rented to sit it on your bed and comment about things you dont even know why did you rent on the first place?
