SKATE w/ EA and Xbox 360
Of all the things that Electronic Arts has dabbled in, this one would be the one that you’d think would’ve already been touched. Prepare for battle Tony Hawk because today EA just unloaded SKATE. Read on…
The closest thing to being on a skateboard, Electronic Arts announced today that SKATE will be released for the PlayStation®3 system and the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system in 2007. SKATE will deliver the feel of skating through innovative controls, authentic cameras and a fully reactive skateboarding city. The game features professional skaters such as Danny Way and PJ Ladd, as well as a reactive city and relevant in-game cameras that capture and deliver the most authentic skateboard videogame experience to date.
“Our game offers a skate mecca for both skaters and gamers in search of the definitive authentic skating video game experience,” said Scott Blackwood, executive producer, EA Black Box. “We’re focused on capturing the actual feeling of skating with the innovative control system, the physics driven animations, and the intelligent cameras working together to really deliver the closest thing to being on a board.”
SKATE’s unique control scheme captures the true feel of skating versus the typical button mashing gameplay of past skating games. Featuring physics-driven animations, gamers will have a unique gaming experience every time they pick up the controller since no two tricks will ever be the same. Developed by EA Black Box in Vancouver, British Columbia, SKATE will deliver all the style, fun, creativity and culture of skateboarding without the countless hours of practice, broken bones and hospital visits. SKATE has not yet been rated by the ESRB.
Okay. So what say you?

well see its EA afterall, project 8 looks pretty cool and theres alot of TH fans out there. I think EA will have to prove what they say to provide a good alternative to the TH series.

Tony Hawk has gotten stale and needs some competitive, I’m for this.

What do I have to say? While the new Tony Hawk game is supposed to be a competely new build, it’s just old. The second instalment of Tony Hawk was really a great game, but I think there’s really not anywhere to go with this genre and a sequel to the franchise only means new area to explore, maybe some new game modes, and upgrades in the graphics department. If EA can find a way to invigorate a skateboarding game then more power to them, I just don’t see it happening. Plus, most of the time in gaming competition is good, but this is EA people, let us not forget that.

If EA are to innovate the skating genre then they’d have to have a control method that people could feel comfortable with.
I don’t see that happening as everybody is now used to the Tony Hawks control mechanics. Simply copying that is not an option for EA as they’re already getting crap for copying Konamis Winning Eleven series.
It could be great, but it could equally go horribly wrong.
