Tokyo Game Show Flashback

September 14, 2005

Where were you on this day? What were you doing when Microsoft, on the eve of the Tokyo Game Show 2005, unveiled the launch details for the Xbox 360?

Tuesday, November 22 in North America, Friday, December 2 in Europe, and Saturday, December 10 in Japan.

Xbox 360 Launch

This would mark the first time that a game console would be launched in 3 territories in the same time frame…the first worldwide launch.

More than 40 publishers in Japan would pledge their support for the Xbox 360 including Bandai Co. Ltd., Capcom Co. Ltd., Koei Co. Ltd., Konami Corp., Namco Ltd., Sega Corp., Square Enix Co. Ltd. and Tecmo Ltd.

“This holiday season, gamers in Japan, Europe and North America pining to experience jaw-dropping high-definition graphics, unmatched online play and compelling digital entertainment features of Xbox 360 will finally have the chance,” said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer for Microsoft.

I remember. It was pretty sweet, the news I’d been waiting for all summer.

And it’s happening again this year with the Wii.

I am going to be working the Fear at Frontier event from that last week of September thru the end of October just so I can earn extra capital to fuel my gaming needs. I hope Nintendo announces about the Wii as I would like to decide for sure whether I should put one on pre-order as so many of my friends have done. Red Steel alone will sell this console to a lot of hardcore 360 gamers but the lure of retro games is a big one and Nintendo’s catalog is very large! I can’t wait to see what’s in store and thanks to Deacon we are sure to get some great coverage!

I remember the forums were going nuts when the news came out! The also how everyone freaked about the whole 2 sku thing, and now look even SONY is adopting MS 2SKU idea for the PS3. It’s funny how things turn out….

The 2 SKU’s thing would not have been so bad if there had either been more of a difference in options or Core was maybe $50 less than it was.

true. the only difference was the hard drive really and not coming with a wireless controller.

still…i wasn’t a fan of the Core idea simply because it made developing games with the hard drive in mind optional…when it should be mandatory!!

Absolutely! We have that stupid 50MB Arcade limit to thank for it as well.

That’s probably not true. I think they assume that anyone with Live (and thus the ability to download Arcade games) will have a HDD. One Arcade game, even at less than 50MB, would almost fill up a memory card completely. The limit is just to stop people’s HDDs from filling up quickly.

LOL yah man, i was gonna get a CORE 360 at first but then i thought forget that cause you need atleast a MU for saves. The CORE however, im willing to bet that MS will phase it out eventually if and when the 360 drops in price. So in the end im sure most of the CORE people will have the HD over time.

Negative Ghostrider…that limit is specifically so that it will fit on a memory module. Some games were delayed so they could be packed tighter to fit because of it.

MS has proven it is not shy about offering other downloads like demos and videos that rapidly clog that puny 13GB (usable) drive.
