Marketplace and TV Shows

Could it be, could it be?  Could your favorite TV program one day be available to you in the Xbox Live Marketplace?

As the story unfolded yesterday, many fans seem to think so.  A special TV episode of Battlestar Galactica summarizing events of the series will soon be available in the Marketplace for free.  It’s a full length program to boot…making it the first of its kind in the Marketplace.

What say you to this?

    I say…not interested.

I say…stop wasting LIVE bandwidth, keep it for paying game customers.

I say…Windows Media in HD is total garbage.

    I say…Why…just why?

i can’t say it was or is a feature that i’d be interested in IF they start doing full shows.

The next time some freebie leechfest video gobbles up all the LIVE bandwidth and keeps me from getting content I paid points for, like happened with UNO when that Halo3 joke was put out, thats the day I stop buying Marketplace Points.

I paid my points for UNO and could not download it for 6 hours. Of course the points were deducted right way.

inertested in the future prostects, Yes.

interested in Battlestar G. TV show, No.

I would hate to say no to this way of media delivery for other things that may be of more interest. But one thing is for sure, if they keep adding content like this, they better come up with a bigger storage meduim (that is actually reasonably priced too!!)!!

I’m prefectly fine with the style of delivery just not on the Xbox 360. Many reasons why, most importantly it’s ultra-puny 20GB storage.

Yeah i don’t quite think it’s a good idea….i mean id rather have them stick to d/l’able content and stuff like that. If they did start putting TV shows on the Marketplace, i could see it getting really out of hand some way or another…

As soon as Sony announced the PS3 would have a 60Gb HDD, I knew there would be a larger HDD for the x360 made.

I think a larger hard drive & better speed should come before stuff like this. I’ve never had a demo take longer than 20 minutes, but during Halo 3 it did take me 6 hours to DL the trailer, but that is a rare occasion obviously that something that huge comes out. Once LIVE doubles in users in the next few months though, if they start offering this kind of stuff + allowing queued DLs etc. what’s it going to be like?

I think money would be better spent on dedicated servers for their top games, rather than getting stuff like this on Marketplace.

Thats the second time in two days UNSCleric and I have seen things the same way.

Live will not double it’s users in the next few months or likely even the next year…but let’s not split hairs right?

If Live continues the growth pattern it’s on, and Microsoft seems think it will, we should be at 6 million by next May.

Microsoft is careful about not over-promisiing most of the time, they usually under-advertise and under-hype most of the time in my opnion. I don’t think they would say 6 million if they didn’t think they could deliver, cause they know every anti-Xbox/MS person out there would bring that quote up for the next 10 years.

The problem what that is the vast majority of the new 360 sales will continue to be to people that already have Xbox’s and 60% of those people already have Live. That equals a much slower rate of growth for Live equal to the number of 360′s that get sold. There were 24 (or 27 depending on who’s number you believe) million Xbox’s sold so that means there’s still 18 (or 21) millions users yet to convert to current gen.

Commercials, right? No way. Especially since I will just have the urge to fast forward all of the time and will definitely not pay.

This is great news, roeported it on xgpgaming.com and was all tingly whilst righting it. I love this series and I can’t wait to see what other things they come out with. And remember, you’re not forced into to downloading anything so if there are commercials, just don’t download them.

    SO SAY WE ALL!

I’ve been very interested in this piece of news. If downloadable HD shows are as big of a hit as I’m thinking they could be, I can see Microsoft branching out a little in that direction. Adding additional servers and increasing bandwidth to certain server clusters is not that big of a deal for someone like Microsoft to do. I would assume they are charging for these shows, so there would be plenty of reason to dedicate servers to the task of serving up this kind of content. If it took off, I would expect the servers for TV shows and the servers for games would be on completely different networks, so people downloading shows won’t affect gamers. I, personally would be very tempted to purchase High Definition episodes of my favorite shows.

Hard Drive space is the biggest issue. I think they’ve got to have a larger HDD in the works. Like Deacon said, the biggest problem is addressing game saves.

I think my favorite solution to the problem would be to create a gamerspace for each xbox live profile (or maybe just gold profiles), where you can upload a certain amount of save games (32MB for example). They could make it an option under Memory in the System Blade. You could select which games you want the saves to automatically upload to your gamerspace. Then you can download the saved games to the Xbox that your profile currently resides on. This means you’d never need to drag your profile around on a memory card. It’s out there whenever you need it. Same thing as recovering your profile, except it automatically starts the download of your gamesaves as well.
Maybe you could also tell it to take a snapshot of all 360 content that is currently on your 360 and upload the list to your gamerspace. Then when you swap HDDs, you could just start an option to redownload all content you previously had (as long as it wasn’t restricted by the 6 download queue limit).

The simplest solution though, may be to include a very small memory card with every new Hard Drive, but again, I don’t like this as much as the first option.

Another option would be to change the 360 to allow any memory source plugged into it through USB could be used as primary memory(allowing us to write to it instead of just read from it). I know this one is a long shot because it means they’d lose money on HDD sales. So an easier solution with regards to the HD TV shows in particular would be allowing videos ONLY to be saved to an external memory source, but still have the DRM on it that links it to only be used by your profile.
